Fanfiction

Post by charles »

If anybody has any fanfics for Donaldson's books there's a great website www.fanfiction.net. They have categories for books, movies, tv shows, comic strips, etc. You'll have to e-mail them and recommend that they add Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant or Stephen Donaldson to their categories under books. I would do it myself except that you have to have a story ready to upload to that category.

I've contributed to fanfiction.net for years. I thought about uploading a Chronicles FF but there was never a specific category for SRD based stories so I didn't bother. Seemed like throwing something in a general category would ensure it would become lost in vast sea of misc. entries. The site is terrific.

Hey, LFB, I think you have the best avatar, ever!

Oh, and I have put things up on fanfiction, too.

SRD pursues litigation on fanfiction based on his works, doesn't he?

If I remember correctly it's only if the writers are making money from it...but I could be wrong.

He is not against Fan Fiction online, just against it being published and money made from it. Though, Sea probably knows more about his attitude towards FF.

From GI:
Of course, there are moral and even legal issues to consider. The legal issues typically involve money. If you, or the fanzine, or the fan site, gets paid for any use you might make of my world or characters, you have a problem. That's a copyright violation--unless you happen to have permission from the holder of the copyright. (For practical purposes, the holder of the copyright is not me: it's my publisher(s).) The moral issues involve giving credit and accepting responsibility. As long as you make it clear that what you've written is based on *my* work, but that *you* (not I) wrote it, you're covered.

(04/14/2004)
've already discussed my views on the fan fiction you describe. In brief: as far as I'm concerned, as long as there's no copyright infringement involved, and appropriate credit is given, then go ahead. Creativity is a good thing. Just understand that building on someone else's ideas is, well, second-hand creativity; therefore less beneficial for the creator. Creating your own work from scratch will do you more good.

(01/16/2005)
But if the question ever came up, and I *did* have a say: no, I would not "allow" anyone else to milk my ideas for money. (Doing so for private enjoyment, or for the amusement of one's friends--as in fan fiction--is a different question altogether. There I have no objection.) If other writers want characters and/or worlds, let them get their own.

(09/14/2005)
So I'll never give my permission for other writers (budding or otherwise) to publish "Chronicles" prequels. BUT. I have no objection at all to what's commonly called "fan fiction": stories written without pay for the amusement and edification of the writer, and possibly of the writer's friends and associates--as long as the original sources are given appropriate credit. Who am I to try to interfere with the creative impulses of other people?

(03/18/2006)
...yeah, there's a few more...but I think they give the general gist of his pov on the whole thing.

I have written one story, its in Hall of Gifts. I may look at the site to see if it is worthwhile to get SRD up there.

I've only done LOTR fan fiction so far. I'm too busy now trying to write my OWN fantasy.

Or should that be "live" it?

Whoa...

I've actually gone to FF.n (commonly known in fanfic circles as The Pit of The Voles; that shows you how desperate I was) looking for Covenant Fic. I love fic. I'm pro, as it happens, and I'm also a terrific nerd geek and I love fanfiction.

Please make a forum at ff.n for Covenant fic. I'll read it. And who knows -- we might find a better archive for it eventually.

The question of SRD's view on fanfiction was one I felt needed to be addressed because I had written a fair amount and I kept coming up with "what if" scenerios that I thought would be interesting stories. Of Seareach's GI examples mine was the first question and I believed from SRD's answer that I had his blessing to continue. To this point I have only contributed SRD based fanfiction to Kevin's Watch but if a forum is created on fanfiction.net I would be more than happy to not only post my existing work but also spend some time on some of my other untapped ideas. In other words..sounds good to me. :-)

Just let me know under what banner the category will be created. I see on the site that there is a Stephen King directory but also directories named for specific books. I expect a "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" folder would be applicable although it would seem to preclude FF set in other SRD worlds.

You can add a category for SRD in case you want to include stories for his other books, or you can just create a category for The Chronicles.

LOL, I was wondering when somebody would mention the, um, quality of ff.net. I have some unfinished stuff floating around there, but I've stayed away from it for a while now.

There was a fellow here by the name of Ariados (sp?) who tried to start a Covenant fanfic site, but I think he got bogged down with real life and gave up on it.

I had this idea for a TCTC/Highlander crossover, but I'm far better at reading fic than writing it, so you can guess how that turned out...

Well, I visited the fanfiction.net site and can find no link to either make or request that an SRD directory be made in the books category. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough. Maybe when I've got more time.
