Chimps Fashion Weapons for Hunting
The first recorded instance of his kind of activity by non-humans, chimpanzees in Senegal have been observed fashioning spears and using them to kill small animals.

That is just amazing!!! have any of you read Carl Sagan and Anne Druyan's Shadows of forgotten ancestors?
www.amazon.com/Shadows-Forgotten-Ancest ... F8&s=books
It is an amazing book that has some chapters devoted to human and animal behavior and intelligence.
One chapter deals with animals communication skills, and how much information they can and do convey. In one study, a female was kidnapped and driven slowly to a location about 4 miles away, where food was placed by a tree. They then took her back to camp, but tied her leg so she couldnt lead them to the food. Sure enough, other famles and males went straight to the food, demo0nstrating that she conveyed direction, distance and the idea of food there.
In following studies, they hid the food and required some very complex information in order to get the food, requiring much more complex communications. I wont spoil it more, but if this post interests you you will love this book.

Malik tis the kind of book that changes your views. I can not do it justice here off the top of my head, but since reading the original post I now want to go back to my bookshelf and find it again.Malik23 wrote:Very interesting article. And the book sounds good, too. But don't worry about spoiling it! Tell us more! (If it were fiction, that would be a different matter.)
excerp from a review:
I will go back and find the places in the book and post what hit me so hard. Its well worth the read. After a description of DNA's development over the ages, he brings us to our nearest genetic neighbours, the primates. His section titled 'Some Sketches from Life' points up numerous behaviour patterns shared among us all. Communication, grief, vulnerability to illnesses, raising young - the list seems almost endless. The result is the replacement of our 'special status' by a clearer identity as a community of primates. Tell your friends that only 0.4% of our working genes and that of chimpanzees are different. If they dispute you, buy them a copy of this book and sit them down to read it. From the first page they will encounter mind opening ideas. Sagan stresses our kinship with other animals, and begs us all to 'stop pretending we're something we're not' - a dominant species with a mandate to rule the planet and its occupants.

Great.
Just freaking great....
Now we have to worry about terrorist Apes!
It is interesting.
How would we react if they started making fire though?
Weird.

One of my favorite movies, bad costuming aside.danlo wrote:George Taylor: A planet where apes evolved from men? There's got to be an answer.
Dr. Zaius: Don't look for it, Taylor. You may not like what you find.
My son is named Taylor. I tell people I named him after Charleton heston. They never get it.
