School Food

Post by Reisheiruhime »

( wow, I got demoted. that's great for the ol' ego.)

anyway. being of school age, I come into contact with a lot of really freaky looking food at school. I know that it's probably edible, and probably healthy, and probably even tasty, but that doesn't stop me from poking it a few times to see if it'll move. I'm serious. for example, at my school we have something called home made vanilla pudding. It is road paint yellow and the exact consistency of half dry caulk. you should not have to chew pudding! it tastes okay, and no one's been made ill by it, but again, you should not have to chew pudding!

makes me think. in lost in space, there was something called a banana/beef bar. is that our future? is school food preparing us for a horrorible culinary communist nation? One thing's for sure: people will lose more weight. :)

(Why was I demoted, dang it?! :( I can't help that the government is a fat cow and won't let me go anywhere or have anything! Foster Care sucks! :bang:

What does "demoted" mean?

Hey, I used to love school food.
And I mean the prepared stuff not just hamburger and pizza type things.
There was this one thing, omg I'm starving now just thinking about it, it was cut pieces of turkey and gravy and mashed potatoes and green beans.
Awesome!
I don't even care if the whole thing came out of a can from 1955, it was the best thing ever.

I was in elementary school in the mid-70's.
Anyone remember the handy little hole in the milk cartons for straws?
What ever happened to them?
And individually wrapped in foil Ring Dings.
Now they are 2 in a plastic wrap.
(More of the whole eat more and get fat mentality)

Deep fried meat!! That's what we got at school. I don't think anyone knew what meat it was, they just deep fried the crap out of it.
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

Welcome back, Turiya!

I have no idea why you were demodded/demoted. I asked for this forum a few months ago, and it was granted.

My son's school is nationally recognized for their school lunch program, so I can't really comment on your experience. Everything is vegetarian and seasoned with an Indian flavor. It's one of the reasons we chose this school for Beorn.

With 15 posts in the last 9 months, the admins weren't sure how muchmodding you'd be able to do. :) Sorry...I'm sure if you beg Jay he'll put you somewhere quiet and out of the way. ;)

Some things that I recall from school were great (rectangle pizza, spaghetti, and I've NEVER had a taco salad anywhere that was as good as it was in school.) But we had some really nasty stuff too, like white beans (blech!)

The school food that was really bad was what I had in college when I lived in the dorms. I can't stand beef tips and noodles to this day.

Best cafe I ever ate at: the Refectory at Regent's College, London. Run by a French chef; food items change every day.

Best breakfast I've ever had was there: Belgian waffles, giant breakfast sausages, eggs I'd put in a picture frame, three different kinds of muesli (strawberry was my favorite). They had a self-serve coffee machine that makes perfect espresso, lattes, you name it.

Oh man—and shepherd’s pie! God. That was a good lunch, their shepherd’s pie. And one time they had a "fish of the day"--more like "slab"! Was so huge and fried and breaded that it would’ve put to shame the best local fish and chips.

As for my college: either they serve something that looks abysmal (you have to ask them what it is), or it's something that looks too good to pass up. One time they served fried squash, a favorite of mine--ah, better than my grandmother's squash!

My very first meal as a freshman was in the student meal plan cafeteria at FSU back in 1978 and they had chopped spinach as a vegetable. Most of the other students passed on it, but I adore spinach and as they also had mashed potatoes, which I love to mix the spinach into, I asked if I could have a large serving of both. I basically was served overflowing amounts, as no one else was taking it.

Imagine the surprise of this child of two Brooklyn Jews, as she had her first taste of southern collard greens...

Fortunately, I fell in love with them, athough I'll never mix them into mashed potatoes again!

Stroganoff yummy, if you make it right. Just don't let the sauce geletainize.... (is that a word? it seems like a word... hmm...)

And I cain't help it I get moved around to all these idiotic places where there're no computers and the psycho old people won't let me go anywhere to get online. Foster Care is just like that. Screws you over and makes you want to stick a plastic fork in your eye and swirl your brain around.

Hmm... Lovely image. Speaking of which, today, there was an apple dish. It frightened me. Muchly. I mean really, this thing had enough corn syrup to feed all the obese dogs in england for three years! (Fat Pets, on animal planet.... quite sad... some owners should be shot...) Anyway... Tried it and couldn't stand the cinnamon... Eurrch.

I dunno, though, some cafeterias do have pretty good food. Well, maybe less of a some and more of a few. I wish everyone would convert to whole wheat and ditch the syrups and use healthier ingredients. Would make for more interesting lunch, that hopefully won't involve second degree burns. *nurses connamon-smelling hand*

I quite liked my shcool food, wasnt bad at all.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

In grade school, they served ravioli so often that for 30 years after I wouldn't order it.
