Just out of curiosity- why does he hate doing it?

And another question - is there a limit to the number of books that he will sign?

If you signed thousands upon thousands of books and were expected to write personal notes in every single one to people you don't know, wouldn't you hate it too? I know I would.

Limits on numbers of books? Not sure on that one but I wouldn't bring three suitcases full.... 8O

I guess it's different for everyone. I've gotten books signed for authors who did it without being asked, and others who didn't at all. I was just curious :)

Wadds, I honestly don't know the answer, I just know he doesn't really care to do it. I think he's totally cool with writing a name, just that he doesn't like to write a "personal note." kinda thingy...

I can certainly understand his reluctance to write a personal note - I mean, how could one do that, to a complete stranger?

The story is this:

For Runes, I asked Romeo to have him sign to Peter "Creator" Purcell ... and the write something personal. Now this was BEFORE SRD published a note in the GI saying how he HATES that. Well, Romeo came back without any note.

About the same time a Watcher in the UK was attending a SRD signing ... and offered anyone who wanted to purchase one, a signed UK edition of Runes. Not, at this time, knowing about SRD's dislike .. I made the same request to our UK brother.

He told me later that "Steve seemed to know you."

Here's what he wrote in the book:

I think he covered it in the GI. He AGONIZES over each phase. He writes ... and rewrites. Now think of the pressure with that type of approach to writing if he has to personalize each autograph!! ARRRRGGGGGG I don't blame him!!

Hehe, ok. I can understand that :) (Poor guy)

I thought for a second this extended to writing people's names. I'm glad it doesn't! :) (maybe he'll cross out Michael for me after all...)

But seriously, folks: if we're aiming at arriving in Albuquerque by 6pm, we should plan to leave Denver no later than, what, 10am I think?

If there are just 4 of us -- and you and Damelon are staying at the same hotel, yes, Waddley? -- it should be pretty easy for us to connect up on Friday morning.
Wow! We're getting close, aren't we. :)

I was thinking of leaving between 9 and 10. It doesn't make sense to leave too early and fight Denver's rush hour traffic, we'll probably catch the front end of Albuquerque's Friday rush as it is.

If you wish to go to the Rockies game on Thursday night, let me know. I did plan on attending it. :)

I think it's time to reach out this weekend and give you both, Aliantha and Wadds, a call to start to get things organized. PM me and let me know what are good times to call.

Aww, Menolly! You're just gonna get more time to explore Alb, right? :)

Damelon- you can call me any time after 5pst. If I don't answer I'll generally call ya right back, I won't pick up if I'm driving, and I tend to ignore my phone if I'm in conversations with others.

My goodness, it's so soon!! :)

Awww...

But Duchess' write up describes riding with him as such a great time!

If I can claim a window seat, I'm generally OK (just ask Fist). I must have fresh air, even if the window is barely open, on my face. But don't put me in the middle of the back seat, whatever you do.

I'm not sure I'll program my phone right once I have your number (if I don't already). But, it would probably be useful to have at the airport, huh?

Has anything been decided re: Saturday morning yet? If no one is getting together before noon, I still think I want to check out services if it's not too much trouble. I truly believe, since I get up at 5:30 am EDT everyday, that I'm going to be awake way early on Saturday...

Actually, I remember the GI question well, since I was had submitted that question (if we are speaking of the same GI question):
Now, since you asked, I'll tell you one thing that I truly loathe: people who not only want my autograph, but who want me to write "something creative" just for them in their book. Please! Book tours in general, and signing sessions in particular, are the LEAST creative circumstances imaginable. On top of that, I never create ANYthing longhand: I can only create at the keyboard. So don't even ask. It just makes me want to scream.

(11/03/2004)

So I had presumed something like asking for "To Kevin" would be okay, but "Can you make up a Haruchai name for me" or "can you add some words of encouragement to a struggling writer" would be ill-received.

Now you guys have me doubting ...

Also, I had heard that some author's would rather write someone's name in since otherwise they think it is going to end up on ebay.

And so far the only experience anyone has shared, Creator's, seems to be more positive.

Doh! I am so confused ... help ...

Wayfriend, I think you'd be safe with "To Kevin", but I wouldn't ask for much more than that.

Damelon, I've got out-of-town guests on Friday night/Saturday morning, and then on Sunday I'm driving to Roanoke to help Batty move out of her dorm for the summer. So Saturday afternoon/evening is probably best for me -- if that works for you. Or I could call you on the way to Roanoke Sunday morning (if you'll be up that early -- I'll be hitting the road around 8am Eastern time and it's about a 4-hour drive).

And btw, after Mapquesting where the ex-m-i-l lives, I'm pretty sure I'll be renting a car while in Albuquerque. (Mapquest claims it's half an hour from ex-m-i-l's to Danlo's, oh my goodness! Doesn't seem right to rely on other folks to drive me and the girls back and forth, if it's that far away.) So Damelon, I'd like to stop by the Albuquerque airport on the way to Danlo's in order to pick up my rental car. Doesn't look like it's too far out of the way....

It *is* soon, isn't it? I've been so focused on MagickMaker's graduation that everything else is kinda sneaking up on me. I did a double-take just now, looking at the calendar and realizing that it's *this* Sunday that I have to pick up Batty. 8O Time flies...

Ok then, Aliantha, we'll find a time to talk this weekend. I'm doing spring cleaning this weekend, so I'll like a break Saturday afternoon to give you a call. :)

We're staying out by the airport so that will be no problem dropping you off at a car rental place near there.

Damn...well, if I wasn't losing my job in August, then I'd be there. I'm starting to think with the price of gas and the price to stay in a room probably by myself, I'm probably out after all. Pity. However, if I do find a job before this goes off, I'll be there.
