A small 'personal' acomplishment...

Post by Menolly »

Think good thoughts for me on Saturday morning.

From the community-wide email newsletter sent out by my shul:
Congregation B'nai Israel Newsletter wrote:Please join us on Saturday, May 19th as we celebrate the B'nai Mitzvah of seven incredible adults that have been studying with Rabbi Kaiman for the last year for their adult B'nai Mitzvah.

Come celebrate and share in this simcha as the following people read from the Torah:

Suzanne Chester
Cindy Dern
Naomi Dye
Ann Eisenstadt
Bill Mauffray
Esther Mauffray
Pam Wagner <---- Menolly

A Kiddush Luncheon will follow the service - of course!

Thanks.

Basically, since I wasn't a boy, my parents allowed me to quit Religious school before I was 13, so I never learned to read Torah or hafTorah, and never had a Bas Mitzvah ceremony at that age. All the other adults listed, except for one recent convert, did the same thing.

We have had weekly classes to learn how to read, and Saturday we will demonstrate our abilities at services.

Traditionally, regardless of ceremony, at 13 we are considered Bar or Bas Mitzvah (son/daughter of the Commandments, a member of the Jewish adult community) anyway, but adult ceremonies have sprung up for those who never celebrated. It's more 'show' or 'graduation' than custom, but I am happy to be doing it anyway.
