but I did do something this weekend that I definitely wouldn't have done had I gone...quit smoking. At least for a day. And today as well. We'll see how long it'll run this time.

Cagliostro!!! MORE POWER TO YOU! good luck with quitting -- I have been through a similar experience (Dont laugh, smokeless Tobac is as addictive and I was on it 10 years)

You can do it, just take it a day at a time....

Christy and I just got back home. Much less trouble returning than going out. Only slightly less than two hours late going from Minneapolis to NYC. That's probably as on-time as Laguardia airport ever gets!

And all of us but Waddley really enjoyed sitting there with you! It was great meeting you!

And you too, dw! And Creator! And Believer! And iQuestor! And Waddley! And Cyn! And Menolly! And after 4 1/2 years, aliantha!!

And fantastic to see dlb (who, as it turns out, I've eaten squirrel more recently than), danlo, and Damelon (iQuestor is so right about you!! :D), and Romeo again! And the glorious Lady Tam!!!

All wonderful beyond words! I'm thrilled and humbled to spend time with such an incredible group of people!

Wayfriend wrote:Mostly, what they all said. Plus...

When I got to the restaurant, the lot was full, so I had to park in the expansion lot in the back, where there were about three cars. I was just about to park next to a sedan but guess who should step out but Mr. Donaldson. So I swung around and parked a few more spaces away. I totally chickened out and just looked the other way and walked to the restaurant. Then I couldn't wait and I ran to the door, and told everyone "He's here, he's here!".

Then SRD came in with his wife, and Vardeman with his son Chris. We all applauded. We had a salad and a meal and I remember I didn't taste much of it but I had a great time at a table with Menolly and DW and Fist and Christy and not Waddley. Mostly what I remember is how uncool I was, on the inside - how emotionally affected I was - about the fact that SRD was right there. I didn't realize it would mean so much to me.

I asked a question but I was so nervous it didn't come out as suave as it was intended, but who cares because it got SRD to talk about a lot of good stuff and I appreciated and enjoyed all his answers.

I only had one book to get signed - I felt weird because everyone else brought a stack. Exchanging a few words with SRD at the signing table just totally blew me away. I am not cool. Luci and Jenn and danlo and Romeo and everyone can be all hes-just-a-nice-guy but I am soooo far from being there.

At one point in the night SRD had depricatingly referred to himself as just a writer. I almost jumped out of my seat and said, You're not just a writer! But later when he signed my book I took the chance to tell him, Sir, you're not just a writer to me.

And that's what I'll always remember most. That I got to say that.
Wayfriend, I've read a lot of stuff that makes me jealous for not being there. I wish I could meet all you fine, interesting people with impeccable taste in fantasy literature :) . . . but this really touched me and made me feel bad for not being there. I imagine I'd feel similarly next to my favorite writer.
You're not just a writer!
Exactly. Thanks for sharing your experience.

And thank you all for your stories.

:::still waiting for some pictures of the two of us together in our SEC shirts to be posted:::

And, it was only two different t-shirts. One just happened to mention the multiple Men's championships in the same year...

Thanks for the pictures, Elohimfesters! Lest we start to take such gatherings for granted, it still amazes me that, scattered as we Watchers are, you can get together like this and get to hang out with STEPHEN DONALDSON, the writer of the books that have been a part of my life for the past 20+ years. Crazy, people, just absolutely crazy...

Amen, MM! An incredible group we have here! And next time, we'd better see you there with us!

Did someone say SRD thought we should do it again in 4 years instead of 3? The reason being we would have read Book 9 (Which, despite my efforts, will not be called Shall Pass Utterly. SRD was pretty serious with his No. :(), and have more to talk about.

:::raising hand:::

Ayuh. He said that to me.

Which doesn't mean we can't get together sooner. It just means he feels the most effective Q&A session would be in four years instead of three...

BTW, Christy and I were doing the NY Times crossword puzzle on one of the flights home. One clue was "hug giver." I thought the answer was Elohimfester. We tend to give some hugs, don't we?

That's actually not a bad idea at all, but that goes back to what I said about the Q&A session - all of the questions that I'd love to ask would be spoiler material and SRD wouldn't be able to answer them.

E'fest 2014 - now that will be a kick-ass E'fest!
