The dandelion is my favourite. I really strugle with macro's...not sure if it's my camera, or if I just need a tripod.

Nice shots MM.

I didn't use a tripod for those macro shots, but yeah, the pros recommend it. I could get away with not using one because my camera has image stabilization. Still, I took a whole bunch of shots (a dozen or so) to get the one that was the keeper. I used burst mode to take 2 or 3 pics in rapid succession - it's a trick the pros recommend if you want to increase your chances of freezing your subject clearly. The 1st and 3rd shot may retain some blur due to your hand movement clicking the shutter, but the middle one in theory ought to be nice and sharp.

Ah, yeah, mine doesn't. (Have stabilisation I mean.) Worst is I'm sure that there is a small tripod lying around somewhere, I just can't find it.

Urgh...you responded too soon. I added to my post: using burst mode can help give you sharper pics, certainly in the absence of a tripod or image stabilization.

Cool tip! I'll remember that.

Absolutely *love* that dandelion pic MM! My new desktop pic.

I have a friend who (it turns out) has the same camera as you MM. I've been having a play with it and I'm now convinced it's the camera I have to have!

See if you can spot the Red Squirrel in the second to last pic. I was trying to take my camera out of my pocket slowly/quietly and slid open the viewfinder. It was about a metre in front of me. My camera "bleeped" and the squirrel ran up the far tree in a split second! I just caught it (no zoom sadly).

I see it! Yeah, squirrels are notoriously difficult subjects. I've got a 6x zoom, but even then I'm hard pressed to get a good shot in - maybe they hear the whirring of the zoom motor, heh.
Man, how I wish we had castles around here. Our country is too young to have built up those sorts of architectural treasures. Ironically, Canada has some of the oldest dated rocks on the Earth.
Awesome statue!
These are my favorites. Gorgeous countryside, Reave!

You weren't kidding around! Hope you have many fun picture-taking days ahead, Sea. The A710 is a versatile little camera to have around. You're handy with an SLR, so you really don't need me to say this, but don't be afraid to use and experiment with the Canon's program and manual modes. There's no crime in leaving it in auto mode as a purely point-and-shoot camera, but it would be a shame not to take advantage of what the A710 has to offer beyond that. Once you dig into its features, it's possible to be quite creative - within the limits of a compact camera. And take lots and lots of pictures, Sea - that's the best way to get better. I'm still learning, too. That makes photography a fun hobby. :)

Yeah MM, once I get familiar with it I'll read up on all the things it can do in the manual and then experiment. But wow (!) I was so impressed when I was playing around with it last night. Certainly it's a gazillion times better than the digital I used to have (which, in its day, was considered one of the better small digitals).

YAY!

So, I haven't had much time to take photos but got out to some rockpools a couple of a days ago and took a few shots of some anemone. Frustrating getting the right angle so I didn't get reflected light. But for quick shots I was quite impressed...ooooh, I love my new camera! These would look better rotated but I'm just too lazy to do it right now! :P

Menolly's anemone's an amiable anomaly.

Holy crud, I just made up a tongue twister!

Apologies to Menolly for dragging her name into this... :P

Nice anemone Sea!
I got all tongue-twisted trying to tell my friend what they were while on my trip to the beach 2 months ago. There are some red varieties we have in rock pools here that open mainly in the shade or when it's dark.

As it was fairly bright that day, they were all closed up into "boob"-shaped blobs. I got fed up saying "amenome" or "anenomonome" etc... so we just said "boobs".

Nice pictures, everyone!

Here's one I took of the surface of a creek/stream at dusk. If you look closely you can almost make out some of the stones beneath the water.

Haven't checked this thread out in a while.

Is there anybody here who owns a Pentax SLR or a DSLR? I'm looking to upgrade in my camera-owning. I want a decent film SLR with a drive motor, and eventually a digital SLR. I have a really basic SLR (Pentax K1000) and two lenses for it, but only one of these will work with the digital Pentax K10D that I'm looking to buy. As the K10D is an $800 camera, I'd rather stay in "film school" for a while longer, but I'm having trouble deciding on which Pentax film SLR to buy. Anyone have any experience with Pentax?

Also thinking to expand to another brand, but this requires buying new lenses, and I don't know that I want to spend that kind of money. Still, I seem to have hit a bit of a wall in the film SLR department as far as Pentax goes, and I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on advanced amateur/professional film cameras in other brands.

Some of the animals we saw at Wilson's Promontory

1) Wombat (I've never actually seen one this golden colour before. They're usually grey or dark brown).
2) SoS with the wombat to give some size perspective
3) Pacific Gull
4) anenomie
5) emu (that's pronounced e-mew not e-moo ;))
6) kangaroo with joey in pouch
7) young kangaroo with a big buck in the background
8, 9, 10) wallabies
