I dunno. In terms of universes, I think that Dune comes close to, (although I agree that it does not equal), Banks' Culture universe. At least in intent.
Herbert attempted the same sort of thing, the same scale, although in a smaller time-frame. And I think that it is the things not said by Herbert that are perhaps the most interesting facets, rather than the things that he is explicit about.
Whereas, on the other hand, Banks is very explicit about his Culture.

As you all might have noticed, the KW sister site, Ahira's Hangar, has been moved from the dreaded ezboard to an all new home courtesy of our resident tech-lord Vain, with much hard work by him and danlo.
As a result, all previous links to the still on-going Dune dissection are invalid.
To find out more about the dissection, and to take part, you'll now find it here, at Planetfall: Arrakis.
C'mon. Give us your 5c worth.

Crap, I never got around to that chapter dissection I was supposed to do...and this was before Christmas. Apologies. I haven't been to the Hangar for a long time.
Has someone else done that chapter? Or are you guys still waiting on me? I'll try to whip something up in any case, before I become completely senile.

No worries, I was away for a month, Duchess has been ill, spacemonkey disappeared...

As I said from the start, we're not fixed to a rigid schedule. If you're still up for it, we'd love your dissection. Don't forget to post it at the new Hangar though.

I finished my second read of Dune some weeks ago. Now when I look back at Lynch's movie I have some reservations. The Baron is almost a different character. Now I like Lynch's Baron, but the Baron in the book is far better.

I'm having a read through. I dunno, you guys are usually way too smart for me when it coes to dissecting this stuff. If I have something to add I'll do it. I can't even remember what my handle was at the Hangar to be honest. You gonna join us there then?
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.
I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.
