I really don't have much to say, except Barry's Conan was about as highly acclaimed a series as ever existed, and it lives up to the hype. he's head and shoulders above the 'standard fare' for comic artists; see for yourself:

Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

Barry Smith is great. I loved his run on Conan. I loved his work on Machine Man. Problem with Smith is he never seemed to do a huge amount of work. If you were never a Conan fan you may have missed the guy completely. I know he's done other things but its kind of sparse compared to others. Wish he had done more.

He worked slow. And he had a lot of theory to juggle, which meant a lot more angst and thought went into his stuff than the usual comics fare. He was a passionate devotee of the Pre-Raphaelites, and an awesome painter. In fact, his painting work took up a good chunk of time he might have devoted to comics, which is why his output was fairly low.

I happened to google him a few weeks back, and he has a website up. But the last entry was posted some time ago. I don't know what he's involved with these days.

Thanks for pointing me here, dAN!

BWS has been one of my favourite artists since I first saw his work in the pages of Epic Illustrated.

I recently got my hands on OPUS vols 1 & 2, which are collections of his work. Magnificent!
