My Neighbor Totoro

Post by Usivius »

This is another 'classic' from Japanese animation master Miziaki (sp?).
And as with all his "children's" stories, it is brilliant in its ideas and execution.
There are no villians here, just wonderful story and characters and absolutely 'dead-on' observations on children's behaviours and hilarious situations.

A must see for animation lovers or those with children (or those still with the child in us)
;)

I love Miazaki. I loved this one as well, but my favorite is still Spirited Away. I went as No Face the Halloween after. Scared some kids as they came to the door for Trick or Treats, especially since I did the offering of candy with the "uhhhhhhh uhhhhh" noise he made. Freaked them right the hell out.

I love Halloween.

I also love the clickheads in Princess Mononoke, and the forest spirit or god or whatever it was.

Has anyone seen Howl's Moving Castle yet? Is it enjoyable? It's one of the few I have not seen from him yet.

I liked Howl's Moving Castle. Enough so that I watched it again with the dubbing, which itself was pretty good. I liked the story better than Spirited Away, though that may just be personal bias. It's easily better than Mononoke.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I bought it at the same time as Tutoro, but have yet to watch it.
Can't wait.

I too like Spirited Away the best so far. However I do like Princess Monanoke as well alot. But the ending always kinda rubbed me the wrong way...
And also love Kiki! One of my daughters favourites.

I love Kiki's Delivery Service! A year or so ago I bought the Studio Ghibli colletion. It's English dubbed, but NOT the Disney versions of the movies. Nonetheless, the voice actors are pretty good. It includes:

Luputa: Castle in the Sky
Grave of Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco-Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

I made a list of movies I like, don't like, and haven't seen by Miazaki.

Movies I like by Miazaki
Luputa: Castle in the Sky
Grave of Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaa
Whisper of the Heart
The Cat Returns

Movies I don't like from Miazaki

Porco-Rosso
Pom Poko

Movies by Miazaki I haven't watched:
Tales from Earthsea
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Only Yesterday
Ponyo On a Cliff
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro

Heh. . . I hear that you should absolutely avoid ANY Lupin title except the Castle of Cagliostro. I gather from your expression of disgust that you agree.

Then you should read the book (Howl's Moving Castle), by Diana Wynn Jones. She also writes the excellent 'Chrestomanci' series.

Only thing I ever read by her was The Ogre Downstairs[/] which I loved at the time. :D Didn't like Spirited Away at all really.

Wow, thanks Wyld for the list. Hadn't realized he was so prolific! I will print this list off and slowly start buying.
