Top 20 movie shootouts

Post by Cail »

I have a hard time disagreeing with any of these.

#1 is spot-on.

Although I might niggle about the order, I too cannot fault any of these on here.
I still put Hard Boiled's hospital shootout at #1.

The Heat shootout deserves #1, Hardboiled is awesome, but I'm OK with it being #2.

I think the Tech Noir shootout in The Terminator is better than the police station.

The only possible gripe I have is the inclusion of The Matrix. I just loathe the style of the action sequences in it. But I understand I'm in the minority.

No doubt, and I was so pleased to see it included. The first shot in that fight is just great!

That list does not have Fulltime Killer on it. That movie has the greatest shoot out I have ever seen.

Okay, I just love this line from the Professional mention:
When the first four S.W.A.T. guys enter the apartment after knocking on the door incorrectly, you just know that Léon is in there waiting but the tension lies in the "where." It's like watching four rabbits trying to stalk a snake.

Watching the Open Range shootout right now. I'd forgotten how awesome it was.

-Have only seem about half these movies.

I dissliked the movie, "The Way of the Gun" so much; it's hard to like even a good shootout from it.

I perfered the Shoot-out in Terminator 2...the one with the gun hidden in the box of flowers to Terminator 1.

I would've thrown in the rooftop scene from Naked Gun and the final scene of Reservoir Dogs. And again, I say see Equilibrium.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Gotta post the Tech Noir shootout from The Terminator. This is my #3 behind Hardboiled and Heat.

I just love the music and sound editing in this clip.

Haven't seen all the films listed, but it seems like a well-rounded group. I love a good movie shootout as well as anyone.

By the time I got to the Top 10 with still no mention of Heat, I was working up a rant...so I was happily surprised and mollified that it ended up being their #1 pick. But it should be said that the bank robbery shootout is just one of the many memorable sequences in this magnificent movie.

I regret not catching Open Range when it came out, as I've heard good things about it. Definitely a movie-to-watch (or *cough*download*cough*) on my list. Actually, I often just wait for movies I missed to air on TV. I'm old-fashioned that way.

It was inevitable that the Matrix lobby shootout would be on the list. What can I say? It's a no-brainer that I love this sequence and everything else about the movie. It's just that there is so much more to this film than this one scene, iconic though it is. I'd just hate to think that people who've never seen the whole movie would just see clips of this endlessly referenced lobby shootout and go "whatever" and move on. And that's all I'm gonna say about the Matrix here before Cail bans me.

Nahhh, you're all right.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Matrix the first time I saw it. Not an original concept, but certainly an original execution. I don't think the film stood up to repeated viewings, and the visuals are overly gimmicky (and became annoyingly ubiquitous).

But I am admittedly old-school. I loathe CGI, and think that it's ruined action films (with a few notable exceptions).

I'm with you there, Cail. Give me some old-fashioned stuntmen/death-defying theatrics.

This thread inspired me to watch all of Heat (only saw parts of it). Definitely a great film; a well-crafted flick--solid all the way through. I also understand why it got #1 shoot-out!

Glad you liked Heat, LF! I only recently acquired the 2-disc special edition, but haven't watched it yet.

(Risks another Matrix comment) - I've said this before in some long lost thread, but the one thing about the film that never worked for me was the pairing of Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss. I don't think they had any chemistry, which made it a chore watching their developing relationship in the sequels. Really, it was like watching a romance between two zombies. (Actually, that's doing a disservice to zombies.) I mean, there was more spark between Neo and Morpheus...or Agent Smith, for that matter...

...okaaay, let's get back to great movie shootouts...

You are more than welcome to either restart that thread or start a new one.

I can go on and on about The Matrix.

Thanks!

But if anything, I'd talk about The Animatrix first (once I find the willpower). To me, it's much more interesting than the "proper" Matrix sequels.
