Good buy?

Post by Menolly »

I've never owned a jump drive, so I have no idea if this is a good buy or not. Input please?

PNY 1GB USB 2.0 jump drive for $9.99. Available in-store.

Thanks

It's a good buy, but not a steal. It's rather smallish, and so, not in demand. Probably a good choice for you, though.

What do you want to use if for? If it's to move files from PC to PC, or to bring pictures down to the drugstore for printing, it's okay. If you want to keep your human genome research on your person at all times, it's too small.

*giggle*

Nothing as intense as that, no.

Gosh...considering my PC has a 4 gig HD, split between 2 gig used by the machine and 2 gig for storage, the concept of a 1 gig portable storage device being small just...overwhelms me.

Hyperception will most likely use one for dissertation research and writing storage. Me? Well, it would probably be to my benefit to get anything Pantheon related off of the laptop. Hyperception is beginning to loose it with my addiction, so to speak. ;)

Other than that, maybe some art files and text files. That's about it. Unless someone talks me into trying gaming. Then, I'll be in real trouble...

Thanks Wayfriend.

Time to replace that 10 year old computer! :)

I remember the days of 4 GB hard drives. How did we ever get by? I bet you're running Window 95 on that thing, right?

I'm not making fun of you. I just replaced my Windows 98 computer last year, so I know your pain.

Windows 98 on the PC

At least the laptop has a 20 gig hard drive and runs XP. But, I'm still on dial-up...

Still, not bad for $300...

Whatever size you get, you'll be surprised at how quick you use it up unless its for only text. Images take up space quickly. That said, I'm pretty sure that a gig will be enough for you. :D (Can't comment on the price...seems cheap to me...also never a bad idea to back it up sometimes...they do fail.)

Thanks for the advice guys.

Apparently the retail price, although I have no idea if K-mart usually sells it for retail, or always discounts it to something else, is $29.99. So, the sale price is a third of it's supposed retail price. Not bad, for not having to deal with s/h and wait time from a website.

You might want to also check the office supply stores - oftentimes Staples and Office Max/Depot will run loss-leader ads on flash drives to get you to come in and buy reams of exotic multi-purpose paper.

My experiences is that the 1GB's are going really cheap (much less than half the price of a 2GB) because no one is going for the small ones. You probably won't find a better price than $10.

Just remember that they don't last forever. Use them for temporary storage. Or keep stuff on them that is also backed up on a real drive. But it should not be your primary storage for anything you don't want to lose. Certainly don't use them as a backup device!

How long do they tend to last, Wayfriend?

Especially if not used everyday?

Well...since WF advised me to think of them as temporary storage, I figure I may as well get more whenever I find a "deal." I have no idea how large this one is, but I won't argue with free. And it's available in the USA, UK, Canada, Oz, and NZ.

www.usbforfree.com/

The FAQ does say the availability depends on who their advertisers are targeting with their marketing. So, I may never actually receive one. But, if one does arrive, yay. :)
