I still believe it is more Earthpower then anything else. It really isn't a "time" thing. They hear the call of their riders days or weeks before the actually call. It's more of a "sending of thought, or receiving of thought." It takes them time to reach their riders, wherever they may be. If they were creatures of time, they would just "appear" instantly and not have to begin running days or weeks before the actual call. They exist on the Earth, not in the Arch of Time. :)
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

There would have to be a time bending element to this. They hear the call sometimes days before it is sent, that must be a warping of time? (the message itself travels back in time and reaches the ears of the ranyhyn) I would think that ability is a powerful tool and could be turned into a weapon for corruption, but since they are creatures of Earthpower it would be like corrupting Eartpower and we've already seen that (in spades)
I do agree that the best way to corrupt time would be an attack on the Arch (or Thomas as we now like to call it)

hmmm...I don't see that as a time element. I see it more as telepathy. Hearing a call in the mind. Days or weeks before that call actually is made is more a clairvoyent (sp?) thing, then a time thing. They simply know they are going to be called, and respond to that call. Earthpower. :)

exactly!

it is akin to a percipience .. and it is earthpower .. not a time bending phenomenon imho also ;)

That's seeing into the future, which could be a powerful weapon, I agree with the Earthpower, and I've just edited my last post. So I am not entirely disagreeing with you, I guess its just semantics - but something (thoughts?) must be travelling through time mustn't they??

More like, mind over matter, the power of MAGIC! Time bending is more like changing past, present, or future events, from their natural order of happening. Which is what Foul will most likely do by way of corrupting the keystone to the Arch (Covenant). The Ranyhyn change nothing by answering their riders' calls. They simply respond to their mind's knowing...

LOL Prince! I think we both posted at the same time. I see what you are saying. But, I don't see it as "travelling back thru time." Because, it really doesn't. The Ranyhyn just sense the call and respond.

Yes, my sig is from Vincent. It was one of my brother's favorite songs, I put it in, in reference to him. :)

O.K I understand that there's no changing time element to this, but when they hear the call it hasn't actually been set yet has it? so they are hearing or sensing something from a future time, if Foul had access to that ability could he do some serious damage, his armies being in the right place just at the right time.

But but but ... look, listen up all youse :P

(hypothetical)
Nov 01 - Ranyhyn feel that his Rider needs him on the 13th. Starts heading over to Revelstone.
Nov 13 - Lord realises he has to go somewhere, and needs his nellie. Whistles. Ranyhyn arrives.

How can the message, or the fact of the Lord's need, not have travelled back through time?

Which brings me to another point. When is the call completed? What if the whistle is cut-off mid-intonation? What if the Lord is just about to stick his fingers in his mouth, and then cops a coronary and collapses? Would the Ranyhyn still be there?

A really nasty person, who wins a Ranyhyn's respect somehow, could have a field day. Every day or so, he'll raise his fingers to his mouth, but stop just short. Meanwhile there's this Ranyhyn running backwards and forwards on repeated cancelled assumptions, until he drops from fatigue.

It'd be like Ace Ventura saying "Chicago".

The Ranyhyn would surely just turn up on one occasion and clock him one.

Finally, why does this thought process make me also think of the Chauffer Worthington in the Three Investigators?
Do you think I like being this dangerous?

*thinks Landwaster thinks too much...*

The Ranyhyn only heeded the call of the ones they themselves chose to bear. I don't think anyone false could "win over" a Ranyhyn's trust.

And I still don't see this as a time thing at all. It's the power of thought, magic, Earthpower...a prophetic sense of their riders' needs.

Well, everyone pretty much seems to agree that the Rhanyhyn are excercising some form of precognition right? (Right?)

So the question is: How does precognition work? When one sees a thing, knows it will happen, and then it does - is that some form of temporal manipulation? Or is it more like looking through a window? Is there a difference? Or does the very act of seeing the future change it?

I'll post my thoughts on this when I have more time. I love this stuff! ;)

a. I'm still 11 hours short of flying out of Aust.
b. Yes, precognition. But precognition MUST have something to do with time.

a. I'm having to let this one simmer for awhile myself. We're headed out of town for the weekend. :D
b. I agree. It's the hypothesizing and thoerizing about the workings of that relationship I'm interested in. :D :D
