Internet dating?

Ok, if there was a graph with one axis representing how desperate I am and the other axis representing how macho I am I think the two would be crossing pretty soon. Right now I'm still a little too macho to admit quite how desperate I am but just desperate enough to start preparing for such a time when I will have maxxed out my desperateness enough to try anything. :? Look at me! I'm barely legible(or should that be eligible*sob*)! I'll be speaking in tongues next.

Right then, suffice to say I've not had too much luck on the odd occasion when I've managed to get out and about recently, mainly through meeting the 'wrong' people. No chemistry, nothing in common, uncomfortable silences etc, etc. Anyway, a female friend of mine put forth the vomit-inducing suggestion of internet dating. That was a month ago. So, anyone tried it before? Any good ones? What do people think of internet dating? Are there any of you other blokes that would try it?

Disclaimer; in case anyone finds this thread distasteful, I'm not strictly talking about sex! I'm talking about meeting someone that your attracted
to and spending time with that person.

Edit; And no smart people telling me that my graph doesn't make sense ok. It makes sense to me and it's my graph.

Why's that? Would you ever consider internet dating Jay?

Haha. That's good to know. I take safe sex very seriously cos I really can't afford to have too many little Marvin's running around out there(I'm talking financialy not emotionally, cos I got vast oceans of love to give :P ). I'm not a fan of tactile interaction, so Internet dating is pretty agreeable for me. My current steady is BearMan304. Our dates consist of logging onto MSN and watching YouTube together. Here's our last conversation (names have been changed to hide identities):

I met the love of my life at cupid.com two years and two months ago. I never imagined I'd be this #$%^ing happy at 43, but I feel like a teenager again. We just found a house to rent, and moved in together two weeks ago.

No particular reason. Just don't have much experience in the romance dept. Mostly because I just keep myself too busy with school to worry about it. I also have had the mindset that if I don't think about it or worry about it, eventually something may just happen.

So far, that hasn't really worked, heh.

As for internet dating, I donno. Like I said, I've been managing to keep myself busy enough with school, so I don't think much about it.-jay

two of my girlfriends got their live-ins on the innernetz.

god i hate doing commercials so this isn't one but both got em on
match.com.

they're both pretty good matches and both, at this point, looking long-term. i didn't think anyone could be as anally tidy as my one girlfriend is but her match.com bf beats all i ever seen. i took pictures of his bathroom. it was...like...right outa "As Good As It Gets" jack nicholson tidy. all the shaving and hair care products were in color coordinated bottles in little still lifes on the vanity and floor of the shower stall. 8O
he was proud and happy of his anality and wanted me to take pictures.

if anyone's checked out the "doggie blog" thread in haven farm, that's my other friends blog who hooked up on match.com.
they are glibly perfect for each other. pithy match.

so well...that's my experience with those kind of sites.

My advice: Don't. Do. It.

Here's some history for you (my experiences):
1st lady I met: She lied about her age, and pretty much everything else. Was still seeing her ex while we dated.

2nd: Liar.

3rd: Just wanted sex, and was quite crazy. Thought I was violent because I wrote a short story about a violent man.

4th: Dumped me because I am an epileptic and don't have a car.

I'd steer clear of net dating. Mind you, going by my experiences outside of the net, it's best to stay single! :lol:

*shrug* Can't speak for myself, but a good friend of mine met his current girlfriend (now going on 1yr+) via an online dating service, and its worked out well for them.

I understand the graph. You just need to add a 3rd dimension - the one where the level of stupidity increases, or the level of rational thought declines, as desperation increases :)

I had a roomate who did this constantly for sex. Idiot was walking into the house with a different girl each day. He even had a notebook where he kept track of them. Most were desperatley lonely people who simply needed stimulation, some were addicts trying to steer clear of old crowds,and one even turned out to be a man.

No, I am not kidding. However, on the other hand, the girl of his dreams came from the same source. (No, not the man.)

A few rules for beginners:

1. Meet first in a public venue. This way you can escape neatly if things go weird. (i.e. she plays with matches while waiting for you, her pimp is there, etc.)

2. Never take her to your house on the first date, no matter how horny you think you are. I know a guy who got robbed due to this. It was my roommate. (Idiot!)

3. NEVER give passwords, credit card numbers or ANY confidential info WHATSOEVER.

4. If you have any doubts as to where things are moving (she wants you to be a Scientologist, join a "sect" (lol, same thing) or arrives with her luggage, dusts off her hands and says, "Check! Only twelve states left to go!"), immediately end the relationship in the most obvious terms possible (i.e. We are no longer together.) and brace yourself for possible stalking. Check your local stalker laws for more info.
