Be Welcome to the Watch, the Humbled. Be Welcome and True.

I think your avatar will have to wait until the 2008 Watchies, as your join date was after the New Year. But should you change it before next year's nominations, be sure to change it back again, to remind us of it.

While you're transversing the Watch, come stop by the Galley for some vittles. And if anyone you know should like Harry Potter (I know my son got me caught up in that universe), come on over to the JK Rowling sub-forum in the Library.

(OK, OK High L-rd. Sub-forum self promotion is finished)

...for this thread... ;)

Humbled, you really should get out while you can. These people are nuts!

But if you do mean to stay, great. I always try to give directions to the washrooms here, because that's a pretty important area in my estimation. They're just down the hall past the bust of Vain, on the right. (We used to have a bust of Donaldson...it's probably in the basement.)

Be pleasantly alarmed by the free-for-all in the General Discussion room. Be gripped by joyful trepidation as you creep through the minefields of Hile Troy's Think-Tank and the Close. Be cheerfully scared by maniacal laughter from the Galley as Menolly concocts her latest recipes. Be seized by delightful panic as you come upon fanatics from both the Pantheon gaming room and the TC room...

Really, whichever room you choose at KW, once you enter, you will know the meaning of despair. Maybe.

Thank you for your attention.

Hello folks! Long time reader of Mr Donaldson...pushing 17 years since I first strolled into the land. I will make a separate "Hello and intro" post but for now just to say the FR is the best book Mr D has ever written, I am truly itching to get cracking with the next two books...whenever the Fnord they get published!

Anyhoo, nice to be here and finally see that there are people who love these books as much as me!

Love y'all

New Arrival in this Land

Post by brotherbenji »

Since I was a small boy I always remember these wonderful looking books on my Dad’s shelf. They had black spines, wrinkled from reading, and the covers depicted creatures and trees that looked amazing to me, resplendent in dark blues, reds and greens. These were the Fontana editions of the first Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever. And it would some years until I understood.

When I was 14 or so my older brother read them. I woke up one night to find him crying. I asked what was wrong and he said: “You will understand one day”.

Two years later I understood only too well.

In Scotland, for those who may not know, we have Higher examinations. In my English Higher, I had to read something and write a critique. I initially chose War of the Worlds and A.N Other. But I was never really a big reader of books and struggled to form opinions about Wells’ language use and that of A.N Other.

I started The Chronicles out of boredom and I am so grateful that I did. I read all three within weeks. And I wrote a piece called “The Theme of the Anti-Hero”. My dedication and love was rewarded with a B. And I have Mr Donaldson to thank for that.

It took some time before I read the Second Chronicles. I admit that I struggled so hard with them. The Land was not what I had remembered or desired it to be.

I have read the first Chronicles many times, like my Father and brother before me; I attempt to do so at least once a year. But the Second Chronicles I have only read a maximum of twice.

All five Gap books were read and re-read during the years 93-97. I worked in a Annual store while on summer hols from University (Philosophy Degree at Aberdeen Uni). And they were amazing. Truly wonderful and I await the re-prints to read them again.

And now the Final Chronicles. They are the best books ever. They make me want to go back to the Second Chronicles and open my eyes a little bit more.

Fatal Revenant is the best Mr Donaldson has ever written and I am truly anxious to reach the conclusion.

I look forwarding to getting to know some of you and engage in some good chat.

BB

PS Started “Mordants Need” this year and put it down. Couldn’t get in to it all, but I’ll get there.

Hail fellow newbie!
I felt the same about the Second Chronicles when I first encountered them, but have always read them in order after re-reading the First Chronicles. I have to say, they have grown on me in adulthood. However, it's always with great sadness that I enter the Land under the sunbane...

I look forward to passing the long wait for "Against All Things Ending" together!
