In The Mother Tongue, Bill Bryson describes Cockney and Boontling as separate dialects. Personally, I think the entire concept is genius.
I'll have to pick that up. I love his 'History of Nearly Everything.'

He has a brand new one on Shakespeare called (appropriately enough) Shakespeare: The World As Stage.

I don't think I'm gonna pick that up.

I learned all my Shaxberd from "The Six Minute Shaxberd" series. My favourite is "The Six Minute Hamlet."

I once saw the 15 Minute Hamlet, and enjoyed that greatly. In my opinion, just about anything Bryson writes is worth reading. :)

I feel like I'm going to close the shop early and go home, since only one person has been here all day. All the usual suspects are in Kansas City playing in a tournament. Meh. . .

See you guys next week! :)

well, I don't post here much, but today.......today is just......bad. I'm in the process of moving myself and my father to a new house. He is 69 (thinks he's 71), beginning to show signs of alzheimers, and a diabetic who insists on buying me candy, cake and cookies that I never eat and always seems to disappear somehow, and also suffers from diabetic neuropathy in his legs, which started as some numbness in his toes and fingers, which after years of neglect (from eating candy, cookies and cake, no exercise and no diet) has spread up to his thighs and elbows. We have 12 days left before we can move in, and he has already packed and boxed everything in the house. We got permission from the landlord to move a FEW things over there before the first. I told him the only thing he needed to do to help move was get off the couch when we picked it up to move it on the 31st, get in the car and then just go sit back on the couch in our new house after we move in.

Today I wake up, go out to make some coffee, and there's no coffee. No cream. No water. No food. No dad. We share a vehicle. I have no idea when he left, but since a majority of the boxes that he packed up (with all the food) are gone, I am assuming he went over there to the new house with all that stuff. By himself. No heat. No electricity. No phone. I have no idea when he left, did I mention that already? I can't get ahold of anyone I know right now to go over there, and have no idea how long I should wait until I call the police to go over there and check to see if he's laying at the bottom of the stairs he's not supposed to be walking up and down anyway because he can't feel his legs. I have no idea what to do with a man who refuses to take care of himself, refuses to listen to anything anyone tells him, and refuses to allow anyone to help him or even care about him so much that they worry themselves sick about him. that's exactly how I feel today: I have no idea, and it's making me sick with worry and doubt.

I'd call the cops if I were you. I'm serious-non emergency--it's seriously dangerous for someone in that condition to be out in this weather with no heat. Last night in Albq. two men in their 90s with alzheimers died within 12 feet of the doors to their living quarters (seperate residences).

well, I'm thinking of calling a cab, which because of moving expenses, higher bills, and my unemployment I absolutely cannot afford right now. I think the other thing that may be really bothering me is that I'm just about ready to dump his ass somewhere where he can't hurt himself anymore. And the thought of me thinking that makes me even more ill. [wit's end]I'm[/exasperated]

Yeah, that's rough man. Now in this country, calling them would be useless. But over there I guess it's the right thing. At least they can check faster than you can.

Luck.
