Oh, about losing the 2/3 thing . . . I assumed they were going to finish up this season at some point. They know exactly how many episodes it will take to finish up the entire series. So I seriously doubt they will leave anything out. They'll just string it along longer.
The plan was.. 3 seasons.. 16 episodes a season,,fini..Yes, 48 episodes to go. WGA strike has thrown a monkey wrench in to the deal... and oh guess who is one of the WGA Board Members... thats rite.. Carlton Cuse.. co executive producer and writer for LOST.

Ok, first mystery/teaser of the new season in the first scene! Hurley yelling he is a survivor of the Oceanic 6...Oceanic 6! Love it.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.
I was kind of disappointed, too. No earth-shattering moment like the others' camp reveal or the plane breaking up last season, or seeing what's inside the hatch with season 2.
Hurley's character is interesting. I'm curious what changed his mind after going with Locke. And of course I'm curious to see what happens when the ship comes. But this episode felt more like a wrap-up for last season than starting the new season with a blast.
It is nice to finally see the Jack/Locke duality pay off in terms of people deciding whom to follow. I've been waiting for that to happen for a long time.
Any guesses as to who the other three are of the "Oceanic 6?" Hurley, Kate, Jack, and . . . . ?
There are 6 survivors that made it off the island (wonder if one of those is the person in the coffin) and they can't talk about it or have to lie about it.
Hurley saw Charlie but so did another person at the mental institute.
i think next week's episode will end up being like a typical season opener. they had to get some stuff out of the way first. but next week, i predict some stuff is going to happen. big stuff.

No, you have to give me WGD to post in here.
I dunno...I wasn't all that upset by it. I thought several things happened for an average episode of Lost. I knew it was a premiere but didn't expect much from it. I do agree it wasn't as big of mind f*ck as the past couple seasons though. Spoiler
The girlfriend figured out it was Hurley the second she saw his hands.
Spoiler
I am very curious who was following Hurley and why. Seems like a lot of mysteries pop up from this episode, but not much really answered, other than probably a feel for how the show will be this season. It looks like we'll have two timelines going - the one we have been on through the whole show and the new one which is after they get rescued. I'm curious to see how these two join.

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life
that's right!!! i forgot about hurley seeing jacob. i wish i could watch it again.
my first reaction to last night's show was to be disappointed, but i remember feeling that way at various times during the series, but the writers ALWAYS pull it through. i was disappointed in the beginning of season 3, but after re-watching it on DVD later, i realized that all the stuff that happened in the beginning made sense and was important. so, i am not going to be disappointed in last night's show. i have faith.

hugo saw Locke looking out the window and Jacob in the chair beyond...
...if y'all look at my posts from earlier I think you'll see that ol' guns might be onto somethin' re: Jacob bein' "smoky", or an extention of his mind. Clearly Jaconb can reach out to those "special" enough to communicate with him. Perhaps that is the one commonality that MOST of the castaways share...at least the ones the island kill.
...I think that the reason they are so miserable upon their return is that they are not where they belong. That they are in different lives somehow/different dimensuion perhaps?
It was nice to have the show back though! My favortie charcters are Sayid and Desmond.
I don't think Locke thinks Jacob is a hoax anymore, not after hearing him speak and being shot for being able to hear him. Ben was clearly distressed by the fact that Locke heard him say anything, and his behavior just before shooting Locke last season is enough to convince Locke that it wasn't a hoax.
I don't understand the reason for spoilers here either. Who would want to come inside and talk about eps they haven't seen and risk being spoiled anyway?
I was a bit disappointed in the season opener only in that it didn't follow the season openers of the previous 2 seasons, in which we are introduced to a new character: 2nd season opener we were introduced to Desmond and 3rd season opener was Juliet.
Still, there were a few intreguing bits as some mentioned above. One that hasn't been mentioned yet, I don't think, was Hurley shooting hoops when Jack comes. Right before Jack leaves one says to the other something to the effect of making sure they didn't say anything about what happened, what ever that was.
Anyone watch the night before when they replayed season 3 last ep? They had text at the bottom that summarized and filled in gaps as the various plots were shown for new viewers who were perhaps trying to catch up. I thought it was well done and they even pointed out a few easter eggs, etc.

i caught a little bit of the recap the night before the season premiere. i wish i had watched it all, but i didn't even know they were going to show it. i thought the captions were cool and offered insight into the show. sometimes they were funny too.
i wonder if this season opener was so different b/c they said that with the end of season 3, everything changes. i don't know. just rambling.
...I thought the season opener ,, as indicated above,, was a very good foundational episode..Obvious and not so obvious questions have been surfaced.....Since Hurley sided with Locke,, how does he get off the island along with Jack and Kate? And more subtley...the decision by Hurley to side with the non trusting Locke, along with Jack, get off the island at any cost,,has them both saying,, we got to go back,,?? How does this tie together?
The answer is Jacob. Jacob is perceived differently by each viewer. Ben sees him but can't hear him. Locke couldn't see him but could hear him say, " Help me". And now Hurley, sees him rockin in the chair and up pops a eye!!.. What is being suggested here, is that Jacob is each viewers unexplored " Who Am I?"..undiscovered potential,,their Truth.
Hurley, like Locke ,ran away from his Jacob. Its interesting that the future scene paralleled with the Hurley/ Jacob scene,, was Hurley finally talking to Cholly's ghost and eventually wishing him away. All Thru The Episode Hurley Is Running Away. The Episode starts with ....Hurley smashing thru a neat pile of citrus as he runs away..Great visual metaphor for,,after 90 some days on the island,, all the good work in dealing with the Island's Illusion as Reality aspects,,overcoming the " Others"..Hurley smashes the fruits of his labors by running away from where it has brought him...face to face with his Jacob. So, indeed,, it is proper and right,, that Hurley now also says,, we got to go back.
There is a strong suggestion here of a split and fragmented LOST over creating a future,,a future of being,, Who Am I?...Do you remember in the early episodes what the question was?...Are You Him?

Or it was just a sublimeinal sprite ad.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
-George Steiner
Also, watching a second time, sure looks like Jacob, who was wearing tennis shoes and a suit, had the splitting image of Jack's dad.
Charlie to Hurley before he disappeard: They need you.
"Oceanic Rep" to Hurley: Are they still alive?
Obviously, there are survivors still on the island even after the rescue, but it begs the question why did Hurley go from Lockes new tribe to Jacks sometime later?
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
