Hmmmmm. Patton pretty much was a hero.

I don't agree. Patton was supremely vain, egocentric, abusive to his men, and reckless with their lives. He cared more for taking ground and winning a name for himself than he did about his men's safety (which is not to say he didn't care about that, just to be clear). On the plus side, he helped to accomplish a "good" end. That qualifies him as an anti-hero for me.

He was a dick, but he was still a hero.

speaking of Clooney, his character from Out of Sight could fit that bill, or any of the criminals from the "Ocean" movies...

Travis Bickle is yer classic choice, nice one.
Travis from Paris,Texas is another great anti-hero ...
Ash from Evil Dead was an awesome character, but he was a true hero imo

I'd like to add the Dude from the Big Lebowski, the guy was lazy, drug-addled, clueless, vague, but through circumstance was thrust into a detective-type role, which he somehow stumbled through with a measure of success .. or as the Dude himself would say :
'has it ever occured to you, that instead of, y'know, running around, blaming me for all this sh*t, that it could be, it might not be, such a simple case of .. y'know !?'

Lebowski is one of those rare comedies that gets funnier with subsequent viewings. (Others include - Strangelove, Spinal Tap, Adaptation) It is especially funny in the context of the Coen's other work. It is their "joke" thriller. It is extremely funny to watch it as if it were a thriller, to see how hilariously it upends the genre.

Great choice - the honorable thief.

Marv (Mickey Rourke), Dwight (Clive Owen) and Hartigan (Bruce Willis) from Sin City were terrific anti-heroes, imo.

...ok kind of tough to slap the Anti-hero tag on a villain , but how about Micky Knox (Nox, Knocks, hell I dont know how its spelled), or Mr. Pink for that matter.

Bogart's Sam Spade is another favorite anti-hero.

I liked Bogart in The African Queen although Im not sure if his character qualifies as an anti-hero.
