Maybe buying a car. Other than that, nothing special. Which is just fine by me -- a quiet weekend is just what I need....

This weekend I am studying and cleaning up.
But I am going to go to my folkdance class in a little while.

I've had quite an action-packed weekend. On Friday I went on a bookstore shopping spree, watched a movie, an opera, and a play, and went out for lunch, most of which I did with my best friend. On Saturday I spent several hours playing with legos with a friend, and several more hours playing with lightsabers with a different friend. I also got a virtual tour of Hawaii. Today I went to a special baptism/confirmation service, and to orchestra rehearsal for The Sound of Music. Then I avoided doing homework. All in all, quite an enjoyable weekend.
Visited the art gallery Saturday. Very stimulating. Hadn't been there in a while.
The highlight was an exhibition of the photographs of Ed Burtynsky. These aren't your standard family album pictures, but large format photographs that take up a whole wall. The images Burynsky captures are appropriately monumental as well - typically industrial scenes: massive shipyards in China, huge rock quarries in India, the enormous oil fields of Texas, etc. His images convey a certain aesthetic beauty about man's great earth-altering machines, while also conveying the inevitable tension between technology and the environment.
The amount of detail in his images is stunning: if using a digital camera, you'd probably need something like 100 megapixel resolution (all right, we'll say 80) to capture the same amount of visual information as in one of Burtynsky's photos. (The highest resolution available on a consumer-level DSLR is the Pentax K20D at 14.4 MP. Pro-level digital cameras like the Hasselblad get around 20-30 MP, I think.)

This coming weekend should be great. I'm really excited for a lot of reasons.
Friday night, the missus and I are going out to dinner with two other couples that we are good friends with, but don't see very often, mostly becuase of distance reasons. You know, "see some old friends... good for the soul...". So that's pretty cool.
But then....
Saturday, I'm heading to Madison to go to my first ever Fantasy/Sci-Fi convention. And the guest of honor is George RR Martin!
According to the schedule he'll be doing a reading from the forthcoming Dance With Dragons, giving a speech, and doing book signings. I'm pretty pumped up about this. I've never had a chance to meet any celebrity types before, let alone one of my favorite authors. I'll admit to being a little nervous, but mostly just very excited.
Then, Sunday, the family and I are going to meet with a dog breeder in the area who just had a new litter of what she calls Teddy Bear dogs. They're a cross between a Bischon Frise and a Shih Tzu. Adult weight is supposed to be around 15 lbs. And they're cute as heck. We'll probably put down a deposit on one, though they won't be ready to come home until early June, I think. Oh, and my three year old has already decided to name the dog Fizz. I told him we should wait and see what they look like, but he's pretty set on it. Not a bad pick for a name, though.
So, it's gonna be real hard to pay attention to work the rest of this week.......
