Usivius, you must have caught the newest episode last night, where they continued the gag from the night before. The joke was that their songs are so long and epic, that they were still playing from the night before. The actual show where they were guests was a Rush extravaganza. Nearly the entire show was filled with Rush in-jokes, interview, and performance. It ended with Colbert donning pajamas and going to sleep on his desk as Rush continued to play.
And that might answer your question, Wayfriend. It was a joke.

No, what I saw was Colbert run out in front of the band and start signing off the show. Then the band started singing the next verse, colbert ducked, and ran back off stage.

That was part of the joke, like he expected the song to be shorter. If this wasn't part of the joke, he wouldn't have had a pillow and pajamas ready to continue the joke--which required the band to still be playing, for the joke to work. There's no way he would have mistakenly thought the band was done if he needed them to be playing later for another joke.
Anyway, there are rehearsal pictures of this stunt, with the band totally in on the joke.

Oh my god, these guys have got a sense of humor!!! I can't believe they put up with that. What other band would have themselves filmed playing their own song on a game?!? Look how seriously they stare at the screen! And then Al's, "I'm just getting the hang of it!"

Funny that South Park says that when they put Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld on Rock Band.

Yeah, I'm sure Trey and Matt were only trying to be funny. They had to have played quite a bit of the game to write the script.
A little defensive, Cag? Are you a Guitar Hero wannabe?
I just thought it was funny that Rush messed up on their own song, playing on little plastic toys. You wouldn't see Tool doing something that made them look this silly.
I tried playing guitar hero once - I played Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" which was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on guitar. I totally f'd it up. It's a totally different skill set than actually playing, but just close enough to be confusing.

I don't think I was being defensive. I just thought it was odd, yo. Then again, it is hard to tell from the show what Trey and Matt actually like as I suspect they satire everything, regardless of if they like it or not.
And yes, I don't think I've tried to hide the joy I have playing Guitar Hero and especially Rock Band. I like music, and I think playing it is fun, even if it is on toy guitars. I like the drums more as I've never had any exposure to them, and I see those translating much easier over to the real thing. Having been a singer in the real deal yet never learning guitar or drums, I find it lotsa fun. And I feel no shame about saying so.

Just teasing, man. Stop being so defensive. (I've found that merely calling someone defensive causes them to protest they're not being defensive, which then can be unfairly used against them to justify the first charge of being defensive. You can't win this battle! Just ask Ki. )
It's getting where fewer and fewer know this skit, 'cause I bust it out occasionally and nobody knows what I'm talking about. And yes, it's Martin Short. I'm next to positive that it was Saturday Night Live when he was on it for maybe a season, maybe two. Time runs funny when you are kid.
