Thanks, duchess, that Endor article is a very interesting bit of scientific speculation. But the picture it paints is pretty horrifying rather than hilarious. While I'm not a fan of the Ewoks, neither would I wish to see their whole world become an unlivable wasteland. Also, the Rebel Alliance comes off looking not much better than the Empire, although the irony of the Rebels' actions "accidentally" causing devastation on the moon of Endor is kind of funny - if the consequences weren't so bleak. If only this had been an essay on the extinction of Jar-Jar Binks...

After reading nearly all the text it seems the author(s) have made valid arguments in support of their theory. I must therefore agree that the Ewoks, as a thriving natural species, we're indeed eradicated from their fictitious existence on Endor. What is truly interesting about this topic is that concerns of this type are virtually non existent in the sci fi community with regard to similar events.
One such event comes to mind that deals with the destruction of a Star Trek capital ship in orbit above a planet, in particular that of the refit Enterprise as it crash landed on the Genesis planet in Star Trek III. To be fair the Genesis planet itself wasn't long for this world but an aircraft carrier sized fireball plummeting to the ground would have certainly had an environment impact. Especially considering what kind of energies power a federation star ship.

Good point about the Enterprise in ST III. The ship's flaming death in the sky and the scene of Kirk and company gazing up at it made for one of the most poetic movie moments in all of Trek.
But in real life, I don't think I'd want to be in the vicinity of a huge fireball in the sky, much less just standing there looking up at it like an idiot. I'd prefer to be on the other side of the planet. Planetoid. Whatever.
And yes, what about those "energies" you mention? What of the famed matter/antimatter engines? In ST:TMP, there was no doubt in chief engineer Scott's mind that if the Enterprise were to self-destruct, the resulting matter/antimatter detonations would be more than capable of taking out V'ger along with itself. But in ST III, the Enterprise doesn't blow up in one single catastrophic explosion. It destroys itself through gradual explosions. Maybe that is what prevents a big matter/antimatter boom, but it seems inconsistent to me.
