Why would one not be able to understand the language of their own dream.

It's not so hard to believe that they were gifted with the understanding of the most commonly spoken land tongue.

That's pretty much my take on it. I mean, if you look at it one way, TC was translated into the Land, so it makes sense that ideas such as language would translate as well. It's kind of a Jungian thing, if you think about it.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

But he didn't understand every language: not the Ur-Vile language, nor the language of the Elohim.

Hmmm, maybe Foul is responsible. Maybe he gave Covenant the knowledge of the Land's dominant language. That way he could tell them about their impending doom. But Foul either didn't bother giving Covenant the languages of the ur-viles, etc. - or he intentionally didn't give him those languages, because he didn't want Covenant to be able to communicate with them.

Yeah, unless TC was multi-lingual and other "real world" languages had Land equivalents, there's no reason to think that Covenant should be able to speak more than one language in the Land.

i dont really see it as a problem...like others have said, they probably either spoke the same language, or somethin happened during the summons...

You gotta admit, though, he's giving Ur-Vile some pretty good competition.
