Well, just for starters ... does he look Victorian to you? Did Sherlock wear shades? Or a fedora? This looks like Holmes from the 1940s. Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Maltese Falcon.
I see your point. The shades are a bit much. I just thought Downey wasn't working for you. As with all remakes, it depends on how far they stray from the archetype.

And yet, if there's a good story and acting, does it matter?

If anything RDJ can pull this out from being a total debacle.

But it just looks like a debacliscous version of Sherlock Homes. It looks to me like they cast RDJ as someone who can House up the part.

I wonder if he'll speak with a British accent. Heck, I wonder if Sherlock will be British ...

I doubt that I'll go see the new movie, but I like RDJ, so I wish him well in his portrayal.

I'm sure Downey can play Holmes. I'm not so sure about Penn, Benecio Del Toro, and Jim Carrey playing Larry, Moe, and Curly.

Jim Carrey does goofy well, I would have no fears about him. Looking at Spicoli, I could imagine that Sean Penn might be able to pull off Larry, pretty well. Benicio Del Toro... less sure about him.

The funny thing is that Lambert, Busey, and Hauer are all decent actors that have appeared in good (even great) films.

Funny you should mention that, since Downey Holmes looks a lot like Oldman Dracula, at least in that picture.

Jeremy Brett's portrayal in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the definitive performance, as far as I'm concerned (like MM and apparently many others). I've never seen a better Holmes. Brett's version is clearly brilliant, but also egomaniacal, mildly effeminite, and subtly unhinged. He always gives the impression, at least to me, of being not quite right in some fundamental way - and while he's easy to respect or admire, he's not that easy to like. As I said, the best portrayal I've seen.

On the topic of unnecessary remakes in general, I've heard hushed whispers of both Predator and *gag* Alien remakes.

The Preadator remake is a go, Robert Rodriguez has bought the rights to it.

You guys really need to get some of the old B&W movies of Basil Rathbone playing Holmes they are the template and many since have worked off that template including and especially Brett.

Just a word on Dolph.... He was here at Sydney University (mech engineering I think) and is not so dumb. He also made the final of the All Japan Full Contact Karate Championships .... as a green belt!!!! I'd fancy him to kick arse with most if not all the so called martial artists in Hollywood.

He was discovered, (word has it) by Grace Jones when working as a bouncer in Sydney's red light district; a sort of: "wash that one and bring him to my tent" scenario. He then got the role as Drago in Rocky VI where he reputedly broke some of Stallones ribs in the sequences. However this is probably as much to do with the bone mass problems of Stalloone being on "the gear" as to anything else. I heard he did not get along well with Van Damme, who in Martial Arts terms is a serial poser and bullshitter.

I believe he still trains with a top instructor on permanent staff and last I heard was a Kyokushin 3rd Dan. Maybe not a top actor but has never really professed to be, jusy a bloke making a living with the talents and opportunities hes been given. but he trained here in Sydney with a few mates of mine and got the thumbs up, not only as a top fighter and martial artist buit as a pretty decent bloke.
