You'd think they'd find something a little less..... disreputable?...... that could do the same thing, wouldn't you?

I heart cider. Had some on draft at a Celtic festival a few years back. Oh baby.

Thanks, Stone...yeah, I checked the store a few days ago and they still didn't have any.Stonemaybe wrote:matrixman wrote:Local liquor stores haven't had any cider in stock for weeks now. I am...distressed. I miss my Strongbow.
OMG! I am SO sorry, matrixman. That's just terrible.
Wonder who is behind this shortage. Cider terrorists?

Hey Prebe -- in the US, we typically get "apple juice" throughout the year and "apple cider" in the fall (the cider tends to be cloudier and doesn't have the same shelf life as our apple juice). Apple cider is non-alcoholic; "hard cider" is the technical term here for the good stuff.
I guess there could be other types of cider than apple cider, but I don't remember ever seeing any.

I think "cider" is used elsewhere in the world (besides the US) to mean the alcoholic beverage.
It can also be made from pears, in which case it's called, "perry."
You can go even further and distill it, making "applejack."
I've thought about making some cider myself. Hard cider homebrew. But I've heard it's a little trickier than beer. Maybe I'll tackle mead first.

OK, so I went to my favorite locally owned and operated store with the terrific selection of individual bottles of micro-brew beers and ale, to see what selection they had of hard cider.
In individual bottles they had a couple of selections of American crafted and one from the UK called Samuel Smith's Organic Cider. It was nearly $5.00 for the one bottle.
In the nine pack they had what Stone has mentioned, Strongbow, and another, Magners Original Irish Cider, which apparently is served over ice.
So, for just me, which should I start with? And if I decide to go with a hard cider with the turkey on Thanksgiving (for some reason, after reading that article I posted in the Beer thread on turkey/beer pairings, I think I might enjoy a hard cider instead of wine), which of the nine packs should I get?

So you have to buy nine?
What are we talking here - 440ml/500ml cans or 250mls bottles? The Magniers, I assume is probably in 500ml bottles? (btw the 'over ice' Magniers thing was just an incredibly clever marketing ploy)
You probably know my answer already - I'd go for the Strongbow. In fact, if I was living in the States and was missing my cider horrendously, I'd still probably buy Budweiser before i'd buy the magniers!
But really, both are very commercial & designed to be easy to drink!

Yeah, the store has neither as individuals. I can ask if they're willing to break open a nine pack to sell individuals, but I did not see any individuals of the Magners or Strongbow on the shelves.

I didn't think to look that closely, they were both in sealed cardboard over wrappers. If you looked at the photo of the shop I linked in my previous post, it is a photo of their beer, ale, and cider selection. From what I see, it is all bottles. I guess I assumed the nine packs would be bottles as well. Does it make a difference?
Ah...good to know about the marketing ploy.Stonemaybe wrote:(btw the 'over ice' Magniers thing was just an incredibly clever marketing ploy)

OK...
Definitely not go with the Magners.
And the Samuel Smith?Stonemaybe wrote:But really, both are very commercial & designed to be easy to drink!
Just overhyped packaging and marketing?
