your comic book...

Post by sgt.null »

let's imagine that a comic company has given you editorial powers to do a project. what company, what project, what talent would you use? and for fun, imagine no licensing problems. so if you want the Smurfs, or whoever, you get them.

mine...

the Zenmen (the stuff I have posted elsewhere)

Who's Who : artwork from the original Ditko stuff. copy by James Robinson. plot points by Dennis R Wood. 1st issue for the main characters already mentioned. with a chance at a yearly update.

Zen Men series: starting with issue 0. and one annual each year. (the annuals could be Past Lives stuff about the cast members)

art: John K Snyder (pencils and inking) plot: dennis r wood
script: James Robinson

Snyder has done Mr. E and the Doctor Midnite mini-series.
Robinson did the Golden Age graphic and the Starman series.

I would also order a card set to run a cross promotional with Wizard magazine. offering them to run a Wizard 1/2 issue.

I would do the series in four issue arcs, so you could read them as a whole or in those arcs. and a summary page at the beginning. and no ads. I would run Batman specials to cover the cost. :)

Hmm...this sounds like the conversations Tom and I had when we were kids.....we made our own characters, clearly influenced by the popularity of Star Wars, so they were guys who basically flew around in space, destroying the spaceships of the Acorian Federation....my art, for the most part, was pretty crappy back then; my dad has always said I was a late bloomer, so it's no real surprise that when I look back at it, it's all shite until I hit 20, and then all of a sudden it comes together, and then, by 25, I pretty much quit drawing altogether.

Anyway, I did quite a few covers for my character....

Image

I think I was 13 when I did this....it's totally embarrassing. The central figure was blatantly traced from Nova #1, which had a John Buscema cover.

Image

I must have been 15 or 16....not quite as embarrassed by this. Heh, I see a Gil Kane/Jim Starlin look going on there.

Image

18....almost had the hang of it. Looks like Byrne was my main influence that year.

An example of a more recent TOM comic since dAN hasn't scanned my worthless crap from the 70s. :-)

What is most shocking is the level of plagiarism being displayed here. “Star Warrior”? Hmmm. I wonder where I got that from back in 1977? “The Human Spider”? Hmmm…that also sounds pretty familiar.

Time Agent Kit

Post by Krazy Kat »

If I had editorial control then I would insist on FREE GIFTS.
I treated myself to the Dr.Who monthly issue mag/comic yesterday because it came with a button-clip wallet that contained an imitation leather bound notebook (9x7cm) and pen; an I'm a Time Agent badge [or button I believe is the American word]; several glitter stickers of some enemies the Doctor has had to deal with; a bunch of really neat little sticker buttons; and 2 refridgerator magnets, a Dalek and the Tardis.

Do American comics and mags come with things like these?

When I was a kid, the Beano and Dandy would sometimes have toys and puzzles in them. Plastic aeroplanes with a rubber band, or triangle crackers, etc. Usually they would disappear over a garden wall before getting home...anyway, I digress. Yes, FREE GIFTS.

A few years ago I sat down at the table with a jar of indian ink and a few calag pens and began to draw the stories of RAMBOT. He was a cross between Rambo and Robocop, a gay Judge Dread and...um, no I think it's best to leave it there.

1. Some friends and I had our own "company," ZOON Publications. The ZOON was our collective last initials. I get a kick out of what you said here, because all we ever did was make covers! We just never seemed to get around to making the guts for any of our books. But man, did we have a raft of covers!

2. I'm amazed that you guys still have all that stuff! I don't have a single example of anything I drew from when I was a kid, which is a real shame. You guys still having yours is beyond cool. :D

Junior Saint

Junior Saint is a complex character, a self-titled Man-spawn of Hate and Destruction. His powers are:

Serial Posting
Ressurrection of Dead Threads
Tireless Polling

He likes roses, Brett Favre, and cheese. Not much else is known about him, due to the secrecy of his identity. If I were writing/drawing his comic, I'd probably be selling the film rights for it right now........

I would do a comic/graphic novel based in the Shadowrun universe. I'd write it with critique from experienced people in the field. I'd look for an artistic style that is somewhat of a cross between Miller's Ronin, McGuinnes' stuff and Jim Lee's Batman. I'd aim for a PG-13 level of violence, gore and sexual inuendo.

I created the Scavenger Family back in grade school. I have a few issues, but no scanner. Basically they were big clouds of dirt, although due to the way I drew them, everyone who ever saw them thought they were hairy, like a wookie. The idea behind them was that they would do normal everyday things, but it would be presented as a BIG DEAL. I revived them in Jr. High, and they were only ever ok. My friend Eric joined with another friend to create Captain Vincible's Paperboy. They were filled with tons of in jokes, and while I found them particularly funny, I doubt many else would. But I might be wrong. There was a very funny cat character.

Sorry, the only way I could maintain the integrity of the character (and the concept itself) was to publish zero copies of the comic.

You know, if kids drew this stuff today they'd lock down the school, call the police and suspend you for 5 years due to the violent images and hate speech in these comics.
