I saved another turtle in the road this one at work.

Julie says we are up to two dozen rescues now.

only one ever caused me bother - tried to pee on me. :)

other wise we relocated them to more comfortable places than the middle of a road.

I tried to rescue a couple of lambs in NZ a couple of years ago...picked one up & tried to carry him back to a paddock, but he ran back to the place I found him after I left...poor bubby must have lost his mum! And the other poor bubby was so cold & weak that he ended up dying... I hate seeing baby animals suffer.

Last week my mom and I were on a walk, and we saw a movement in the grass at the side of the road. I stepped forward a few feet, and saw two adorable baby skunks tumbling over one another as they scrambled out of sight. It was so cute, and a bit funny.

The other day at work, walking across the street was a guy dressed in drag. :hairs:
He was the neighborhood transvestitte. (sp?)

Wait a minute...

On Sunday my family and I were on the beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. There was a thunderstorm coming in, we were strolling along the beach and watching the storm, with the rain just starting to pitter patter.

I noticed that some of my daughter's hair was starting to point straight up. She has very long hair. Then I noticed my other daughter had the same problem. Then my wife. Then, according to the kids, even me.

Everyone thought I was being mean. But I marshalled them all off the beach and into the car.

Later, I checked the web, to see if I was being overly cautious. Sure enough, according to NOAA, "Just before lightning is about to strike, you’ll feel a tingling sensation and all of your hair will stand on end."
Air, however is a good insulator, and the electrical potential between cloud and ground must build up to levels of tens to hundreds of millions of volts before the insulating properties of the air break down and an ionized conductive channel is established for the current to flow between the two charges. If you have ever had your hair stand on end while under a thunderstorm, you were in this positive ground current, and could have become a lightning target.
Well, I would not have believed that if I had not seen it with my own eyes. And I certainly never saw it with my own eyes prior to last Sunday.

I think I'm glad I didn't know these facts at the time. I probably would have made everyone crawl to the car ... :)

Seen a small warterspout two days ago.
While on top of a house that was under construction, I could look out to the Gulf of Mexico through the downpouring rain and noticed that a patch of water rising up in circular motion about 50 - 70 feet in the air.
The waterspout was only about 1/4 mile away.

Was I frightened? Naw.. Florida tornadoes are usually very small, but it very cool to watch.

The only thing you have to be careful of when relocating turtles is that you have to move them off the road in the direction they were already traveling. If you put them back where they came from, they'll just turn right around and start back across the street, no matter how many times you pick them up and move them.

Was that "tragic", "bizarre", "amusing", or all three? :D

I'ave rescued a few turtles, too. Once there was a large snapping turtle, maybe 18" long shell. I took a big stick and tried to push it in the direction it was going (I could have lifted it but had heard stories about how long they can stick their necks out so I figured this was the way to go). It was quite uncooperative and attacked the stick. I think I ended up dragging the thing out of the road once it got a good grip on the stick.

ok, this just happened about 10 minutes ago. I was cleaning the pool, skimming the bugs off the surface. I went to skim off what looked like a dead fly. when I brought the skimmer near the bug it dove down into the pool, swimming like a penguin under the water, deeper and deeper. When I stopped moving the skimmer it stopped moving and slowly floated to the top. As soon as I moved the skimmer it dove under the water again.

Then I noticed there were a bunch of bugs like this. They varied in size from about a 1/16th on an in to about 1/2 an inch. They looked like flies. As soon as a shadow went past them they dove and swam like fish. They stayed under for a long long time.

Anyone ever heard of such a creature? I feel like Darwin discovering a new species.

Today as I was riding my bicycle to work, some guy asked me if he could have it. I said "Uh, no... sorry!"

WTF?

We get those in our pool too. I always thought it was some sort of water beetle.

I looked up the water beetle and they are waaaay too big and menacing. yuck! But I did figure out what they are ( I think). They are called Water Boatman. They live in mid water though the ones I say were on the surface. They dive using water bubbles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_boatman

Hmm, I've never seen a Water Boatman diving before. Then again, I've never studied them very closely.

Darwin was in full force this weekend.

A guy in the Bayou decided to go for a swim even after being told there are alligators and he ignored the signs all over with warnings about it. The marina caretaker told him "Please dont get in the water, these gators will eat you". Now it was dark, and alligators feed mostly at night and are much more aggressive after dark.

his answer.."F!CK the alligators". He took his wallet and keys from his pants and jumped in. Almost immediatly he was screaming for help and disappeared from view, only to come up floating and be dragged down again.

In a second incident.... A guy in Maine decided to set off a firework from the top of his head. he was killed instantly.
