Well, two things. First, I finally got around to procuring Stone Age, and I'm going to tell you, not only is it a fairly fun game, but it is gorgeous! Behold! the board!

So, you place your cavefolk to obtain resources such as food for your tribe, tools, wood, brick, ore, and gold. You also utilize your cavefolk to build huts to score points, birth new members to your tribe, or to build civilization that may help you during the game and provide points at the end of the game.

I've only played in two-player mode, but that was fairly fun, and I hope to play it at the max of four players soon...which should prove quite interesting.
Next, as I was perusing BoardGameGeek.com (as I will often do to check out games that I am interested in or to get pictures for my reviews
)
I came across the following new game:

This is pretty much a tile-laying game that kinda plays like a domino-war hybrid...with some Hopi madness infused into it's soul! Pretty much, you lay the tiles down in a manner similar to what you do in Scrabble, except the row and column length can not exceed seven. Each tile has a number (1-8), and if you lay down a tile in a row or column that has the highest value, you score points...or do you? All the tiles except for those valued 7 and 8 have special abilities that may not make this game quite as simple as it appears( for example, a tile with a one [the Koshari, if you will], reduces the value of tiles it touches to zero!). Anyway, it seems to be a fairly exciting, if simple, game that I have my sights set on...

The score is kept around the edge of the board, but the number of turns depends on 1) When one of the building decks is exhausted or 2)If the civilization deck is exhausted.Earthfriend wrote:Stone Age looks good, Orlion! Am I right in assuming there are 10 turns, with the scoring kept around the edge of the board?
Here is a pretty good video review which goes over the game mechanics pretty clearly and visually. It also helped me make my decision to purchase it.

Cool. Good review - thanks for the link, Orlion. (Even if the reviewer's monotone almost put me to sleep, lol.)
I may have to purchase this one myself.

It's on my bookshelf as I type. It makes the best EVER drinking game!
Definately "frustration" - that was a well named game - spent many an hour playing that with my parents when I was younger.

I broke down and allowed my husband to purchase Space Hulk.

It was released in 1989 and had a limited run. They didn't make anymore, but on September 5, 2009 they re-released it, also with a limited run, and most copies were sold within a week of its release. Needless to say, it was a miracle we got our hands on a copy.

The game is based on Warhammer 40,000K and is only a two-player game, though you could possibly add more players if you so chose.
It's Space Marines versus Genestealers aboard a giant Spacehulk! There are about 12 missions to play through, and it actually tells a story of the 1st Company Blood Angel Terminators (my favorite Space Marine chapter). It's surprisingly well-balanced, too.
The pieces are really well-made; you can actually paint them if you wanted. Which looks pretty bad ass (I did not paint this):

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. It's a really great game and now I babble incessantly about 40K all the time.

Seeing all the games people here have played makes me think my childhood was deprived.

I can totally see how being forced into activities with relatives would ruin any love you might have had for said activities.Gil galad wrote:I mostly play online chess, but have also dabbled in Go and Chinese Chess.
Absolutely suck at scrabble, I think I was scarred for life by being forced to play with my Grandma as a kid.
I have yet to feel any desire to learn Go, but if I did, I'd bug you first (don't hold your breath, though). I love scrabble because I feel engaged and excited over wordplay. I had a brief fling with chess and chinese chess, but their abstract patterns did not give me as much pleasure as the alphabetic constructs of the scrabble board. Interestingly, my love of word games does not translate into any enjoyment of number games like Sudoku, which I understand is popular here at KW. But it does please me to see an "Unfettered One" at the top of the KW Sudoku rankings.Avatar wrote:I suck at scrabble too, which has always annoyed me. I always feel I should be better at it. I do play Go though.

Ah, memories of Space Crusade. I still have that somewhere. Never played Space Hulk, but I'd probably enjoy it. I know very little about the Warhammers, but I've always liked the 40k setting.JazFusion wrote:I broke down and allowed my husband to purchase Space Hulk.

I bought the original edition of Stratego just two days ago at a Target store.jelerak wrote:Just last week I bought a new updated version (fantasy characters rather than military) of Stratego and have been playing it with my 8 year old son. He is finally starting to get the grasp of using strategy in his decisions rather than blindly moving through the board.
There is an option to play a 'special powers' version, but we have been sticking to the classic version.
I loved this game when I was a kid.
