Well, at first I didn't really like the show - I never used to like Bill Bailey - but as it went on I liked it more and more. The second series (at least I think it was the second series) was great.

..I bet that's ironic somehow, but I don't undestand irony, so I wouldn't know.

It is a lovely (well... not so lovely perhaps) story about a alcoholic book-shop owner who hate to sell books and his customers.

Yeah, Black Books is the best sitcom since spaced, IMO. I loved the episdode in the second series where Manny succumbs to 'Dave's Syndrome'. Actually, a friend of mine has an unpaid job on the set of the third series, which is being filmed as we speak.

Yeah I watched it occasionally. It was very funny. Esp the episode where they get drunk.

Fran's shrinking flat was funny too.

IMO, the funniest bit on the DVD of the first series (highly recommended, btw) is not the episodes but the outtakes. We get to see, for instance, Bernard attempting a long line of different Irish-folk-sounding songs while the little boy he's singing to does a heroic job of keeping a straight face (and the kid's deadpan - Bernard breaks down before he does), and this little dialogue:

(The actual line is
Bernard: "Now, listen! Maybe all those other boys who work in bookstores can do what they want, but this is my roof you're living under! You'll abide by my rules...)

Bernard: "Now, listen! Maybe all those other boys who work in bookstores can do what they want, but this is my roof..." (forgets the line, freezes for a moment, wagging his finger at the ceiling) "...and I like it!"

And of course, Manny's closing, apparently improvised, little song:

Who will buy my books today?
All the authors on display
Some of Dickens' and some of Shaw's
Peter Benchley - he wrote
Jaws

Who will buy my books today?
Who's in the books? I hear you say
Leopold Bloom and Joseph K
and Bridget Jones [failed attempt at guitar lick]

Who will buy my books today?
Why read books? I hear you say
It's educational and it's fun
and you get sucked into a whole different world

Who will buy my books today?
Maybe something in (???) trade
Something by obscure women
or something that's not necessarily pop-driven

Who will buy my books today?
Now I'll send you on your way
Before you go, there's just one thing:

(spoken) We're completely sold out of The Lord of the Rings!

My informant tells me that in one episode, Manny and Bernard try to write a children's book, with hilarious consequences.
