Of course you're welcome. But please know that I made no attempt whatsover to build an exhaustive list of mistakes as I read. (What reader does?) I merely named some that came to mind as I wrote that post to provide a flavor, if you will, of the kinds of mistakes that I found. If I see any others, I will pass them on to you, since you ask. But I am not expecting to re-read your Critical Study any time soon, if you're wondering ... :)
cbarkley wrote:As for contributing to the discussions here on the Board, I will certainly try to find time. I am not retired yet and teaching always takes a majority of my time. And I am of that generation that is really not used to blogs or twitter or discussion boards. I will try to read through the myriad of postings already listed here and add my two cents when warranted. I am a little daunted by the sheer number of posts. If there are specific areas you think might be most interesting to me and to which I could add significant insights, please point me in the right direction.
Oh, gosh, trying to CATCH UP with a message board is the worst possible thing to do!

Here's my advice. Maybe some others will chime in.

Start off by visiting every day or so, or every week, as time allows. When you do, glance at the posts that are new since the last time you visited the board. (From the index page, click "New posts since last visit". You can then click on the ->[] under "Last Post" to see what was just added. Or the topic title to read from the beginning.)

As days go on, you'll soon discover, by title or by content, that there are parts of Kevin's Watch you're not interested in, and parts that you are.

When you feel the urge to do less lurking (reading only) and more contributing, begin by contributing to any ongoing topics.

As more time passes, you'll get more familiar with the Kevin's Watch territory, and then you can start browsing specific forums for other topics you may be interested in, but which aren't currently active. By all means, feel free to "bump" them -- make them active again - by replying.

You may find the topics in the Dissection (group read) forums interesting. Or that they might benefit from what you might add to them.

Other book-related forms will become apparent. Or, conversely, you may decide to become addicted to In Pursuit of Mallorys. Or talk about comics. Whatever. We serve all kinds. :)

And don't forget the Search function. Chances are, any topic you're interested in has probably already been discussed.

Hope this helps!

I am astonished (no...actually, I'm embarrassed) by the content of some of this thread.

Rude! It's just plain *rude*!

I hear you..

I'll stick to the Fiction and leave the analysis to those more able to enjoy it.... sometimes a story is just what you want it to be... A Great story without a reason why, even from the Author himself. though i do enjoy reading the GI and Finding out what he thinks of the people trying to analyze sections of his stories.

Good luck with your book though. I hope its a best seller ..maybe it will bring more readers.

It remindes me of when TC dropped the Lomillialor and Baradakas charged him with a club.....

People would probably have been less critical if the author had been part of the Kevins Watch community for a while, I think she was recieved as a Raver/stranger (who is not the Author) with a book analyzing something that alot of you have been doing since 2002 here at the watch... Personally I wish anyone who has love for the Chronicles Luck and success .... 8)

I am truly dismayed at some of posts in here. Some folks seem bound and determined to prove correct everything bad that SRD has stipulated regarding how shallow the real world of ours is. Have we NO civility in here ??? And...you all seem to be missing the entire point of Ms.Barkleys work, and getting fixated on small errors in the text, as opposed to "getting" what she's talking about. You guys remind me of my 5th grade teacher who was obsessed with correcting my spelling errors, and grading me exclusively on that, as opposed to grading me on how well I analyzed the book I did the book report on ! Who the hell cares about minutia ? Focus on the real deal! For my thoughts on the matter, I have started a new thread in the AATE Forum. Lastly, I offer my sincere apologies to Ms. Barkley regarding other peoples lack of manners, and lack of intellectual perception. Having said that, I do NOT claim to be an Einstein sort of fellow. But I, at least, am able to grasp what Ms. Barkley is trying to say, and overlook the small "errors". Some of these posts make me sincerely grateful that SRD himself doesn't come in here, and read some of this stuff.
"Who enters here, do not lose hope / Who leaves; do not rejoice / Who has not been, shall be here yet / Who has been here, shall never forget" Anonymous / discovered scratched into the wall of a cell in the KGB's Lefortovo Prison in Moscow/originally quoted in the book "Alexander Dolguns Story" (by A.Dolgun),describing the ordeals of an American citizen falsely imprisoned by the Soviet Union from 1948 to 1957.

I understand that point of view. For example, I said about this book "the author did bring to my attention several ideas I had not encountered before ... the author builds on and expands these ideas quite satisfactorally." But everyone seems to harp on the single point that I dared to mention that I found factual errors.
spoonchicken wrote:Focus on the real deal!
The real deal is that this book has good material in it, but it's disorganized, bloated with filler, and full of mistakes. I'm sorry if you think that pointing this out is some sort of crime. But I doubt you can demonstrate that these criticisms don't apply. And I think you should allow other people to decide what they consider important. Not to mention you shouldn't knock people for not liking what they don't like.

Just wanna chime in here to say that I don't think there was anything particularly rude in this thread. (Except maybe my own comment? ) I think the criticism was tasteful and judicious. And that an effort was made not to be offensive.

Whether it's justified or not may be debateable (between people who have read the book), but it was perfectly legitimately made, and by no means insulting.

(And for what it's worth, I think that the existance of factual errors are a fundamental part of determining the quality of a work.)

I wonder if Christine Barkley will make good on releasing a revised edition of this book ?
I was reading a few free pages on google this evening and it looks quite good - although it's pricey on amazon/book depository ... if a revised edition were to be released (with corrected spelling errors) I'd consider forking out ...
