Lost--Season 6 - Spoilers Abound!!!
Moderators: Cagliostro, sgt.null
I kinda wonder whether perhaps the man in black is actually an ally of Jacob's instead of being the enemy as most people seem to think... the dialogue between the two at the beginning of The Incident seemed to me it could be taken both ways, with the man in black's promise "someday I'll kill you" sounding like a promise - as if both wanted him to kill Jacob, but neither could figure out a loophole to allow him to do so...

Should we set an ettiquette on spoilers? That sounds good, especially since I'll have to wait until Wednesday afternoon to watch the season premiere (dammit!!!! Stupid work!!!).
I think it is reasonable to have spoiler tags until a week after the episode in discussions. So with the premiere, we'd use spoiler tags on things relating to that episode from Feb 2 to Feb 9. Does that sound agreeable?
As the new mod and probably the first time I'd get to stretch my modly duties, I'll be happy to police the area for breaches of the spoiler tags after I see the episode. I might pop in on Wednesday morning very early if possible (the morning shift I will be working Wednesday the 3rd has extra responsibilities and I might not have time to check), so I have my fingers crossed it will not be an issue, and hopefully for the rest of season 6 this will not be an issue and I'll be able to spoiler tag as necessary.
-----
As for Jacob/Loophole as good or bad - I think in pure storytelling forms, Jacob dying would imply that he is the force of good. After all, typical stories get darkest right before the end, so it seems the "good guys" took the biggest blow at the finale of season 5. Lost does mess with expectations, and as Murrin said and I have overlooked until now, Jacob was the one encouraging members to come back to Lost Island, so that does create a bit of a stumbling block for my theory. Which just goes to show why I should stop trying to create theories about Lost and just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Could be that Jacob and Loophole do not represent good or bad, but rather birth and death... Jacob does live under a statue of a goddess of childbirth and pregnancy...
Of course, we wouldn't want death to get the upper hand of birth... that would be the end of the world!

That's an interesting theory, and if the writers weren't such Stephen King fans, and the setup in Season 1 with the backgammon discussion between Locke and Walt didn't happen, then I'd see your point. But there have been several references to "good" vs. "evil" in the show so far. I'd prefer the birth and death thing more, to be honest.

Well we do have the running theme of children not surviving gestation when conceived and carried to term on island, and we do have a Tawaret statue that used to be whole (And births on the island didn't used to be a problem) and now Tawaret (Who just so happens to be right outside Jacob's domicile temple) is merely a four toed foot. Death has most certainly been a running theme on teh island.Cagliostro wrote:That's an interesting theory, and if the writers weren't such Stephen King fans, and the setup in Season 1 with the backgammon discussion between Locke and Walt didn't happen, then I'd see your point. Actually, the backgammon game was between "dark" and "light", not good and evil - so it's just a duality, not necessarily a moral one. Perhaps free will vs. fate?Cagliostro wrote:That's an interesting theory, and if the writers weren't such Stephen King fans, and the setup in Season 1 with the backgammon discussion between Locke and Walt didn't happen, then I'd see your point. My box set has arrived, and I've started my watch through from the beginning.
Tracking connections between Locke and Loophole:
Season 1, episode 4 - Walkabout: Locke, Kate, and Michael go into the woods to hunt boar. Locke leaves the others behind to go catch it himself. The monster arrives - sounds are heard, movement in the trees heading in Locke's direction. We see the monster's perspective as it comes directly face to face with Locke.
Shortly after, Christian appears on the beach, in his funeral suit, and is seen by Jack. Christian's apparition leads Jack to Locke, returning with the dead boar. When asked by Michael, Locke lies about seeing the monster.
Note that this is the episode which reveals the fact that Locke miraculously recovered the use of his legs after the crash.

Yes, Walkabout. That is the ep that got me hooked into the show. That final scene with Locke trying to get on the bus yelling it is his destiny and then the cut to him wiggeling his toes and our big revelation with the whole ep falling into place as he smiles while all around him swirls chaos is one of the best scenes of the series, if not the best. I can still feel the Oh wow moment when we see him in the wheel chair and then just after the crash standing up and checking his legs out. A very moving scene and just the right music.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

Yeah, for some time, I thought from that moment that Locke was a doppelgander because of that episode. I learned better,
Spoiler
but hey, I eventually ended up being right

Episode 4, White Rabbit: Jack is led on a chase through the jungle by Christian. When Christian disappears a final time and Jack is left hanging from a cliff, Locke appears to rescue him.
Pertinent to Locke's story, a statement by him in this episode: "Crazy people don't think they're going crazy, they think they're getting saner."
Edit: Rousseau's story of what happened to her team does not match with what Jin lived through in season 5. (Two months on island before "infection", visit to the Black Rock.)

Season 1 finale, Exodus: Pt 2: Locke is chased by the monster, gets grabbed by something and dragged to a hole on the ground. Kate throws a stick of dynamite down the hole. Distant bang, then smoke appears out of the ground a short distance away - and vanishes into the jungle in an odd way smoke usually doesn't behave.
Question: Have we ever seen the whole noise and trees flying into the air thing with the smoke monster in later series? Was the original version of the monster dropped in favour of smoky?

You actually see smoky a little bit before he attacks and in that same form (like a shadow) in S3, I believe, before someone sees their dead. The noise is generally always associated with it, and in S4, smoky attacks the commandos.Murrin wrote:Season 1 finale, Exodus: Pt 2: Locke is chased by the monster, gets grabbed by something and dragged to a hole on the ground. Other points he's really not in a killing mood or isn't around trees. So, I think if it's acting like "a security system", it tears up trees and stuff, but otherwise, it takes the form of a dead person ( I presume from the memory of the person it is appearing to).

OK. Nobody is allowed to say a word until after I've downloaded and watched it tomorrow night.
So much for rewatching everything. Three discs into season 2. Noticed: This is where the story pace slowed, not season 3. There's just as much character stuff going on in each episode, but much less plot advancement.
