And yeah, most of the localities around here have already blown through their snow-clearing budgets.
The NWS is now saying possibly 30 inches of snow.

Tell me about it. We get big storms in Ohio, and they still don't keep up the roads!...matrixman wrote:For those of us used to big snowstorms, I guess it would be easy to say people in D.C. are overreacting.A snowstorm dubbed "Snowmageddon" - not just major, but historically major - was heading to the U.S. capital on Friday, threatening to dump as much as 65 centimetres on a region that rarely gets more than a few dustings a year.
Not a flake had fallen from the sky, however, when schools in the city and its surrounding suburbs announced they were closing early, the mayor of D.C. declared a snow emergency, airlines cancelled flights, airports prepared to shut down and citizens raced to grocery and hardware stores to stock up on supplies.
The storm was said to be in contention to break the record posted by a 1922 blizzard that blew in off the Atlantic.
But a traditional D.C. winter doesn't normally result in anything more than a couple of snowfalls a year, amounting to rarely more than a sprinkling by Canadian standards. Consequently, the city and its suburbs in Virginia and Maryland don't allocate large portions of funds to snow removal, which means a major snowstorm is crippling.

Instead, I commend the city for taking this seriously and declaring it an emergency. Better safe than sorry.
how much so far? We are getting less (so far) than predicted.aliantha wrote:Thanks, MM. Usually I'm right there with you in making fun of how Washingtonians cope with snow. But this kind of snow total would be a lot for just about anybody, I think.

I haven't been outside to measure it, but I can barely see my car... The apartment complex crew pulled out a little front-end loader to clear the snow awhile back. It worked for a pass or two -- and then got stuck. So they went back to the pickup with snowplow attachment. It was fun to watch.lorin wrote:how much so far? Yeah, the kid should talk...he's probably the one who gave it to ya, right? Isn't that one of the primary functions of children - passing all manner of germs to their hapless parental units?Seareach wrote:This is the ninth day I've been locked up here and I'm going stir crazy. Of course, SoS has announced he doesn't want me taking to him to school looking like "that" but my face is sort of looking normal again (apart from the fact I look like I've had a massive ache problem...boooohooooo!).
Actually, you *can* get it again...if you're unlucky!CovenantJr wrote:Well indeed. That's the one positive thing about chicken pox: once you've had it, you've had it. You can't get it a second time.Seareach wrote: Anyway! I've got plans of NEVER having this again. Dumb stupid pox!
Strange thing is, he hasn't had it. He's still got a little while to go before he's out of the woods (it's a 14 to 21 day incubation period I think). But he might be like me: when I was a kid every kid in my school got it except for me and my sis. There was only 25 of us in the school but, still. Seasis got it when she was about 23 and I was wondering when my time would come. Glad I've got it over and done with now though!matrixman wrote:Yeah, the kid should talk...he's probably the one who gave it to ya, right? Anyway, glad you're better. Nine days...that's basically a prison sentence. I've never stayed home for more than two days.
Heh. I was unlucky/weird enough to have them twice.Seareach wrote:Actually, you *can* get it again...if you're unlucky!CovenantJr wrote:Well indeed.
