How about... Clive Owen as TC

Post by Belkode »

In my mind's eye he has many of the attributes. Not the best looking actor, so it won't distract. Has the appropriate age for all the books. I definitely think he can pull the tortured and fragmented persona that is Thomas Covenant

Any comments?

Pity its all academic for now.

I've often thought a younger Tim Robbins would be good for TC, a bit on the tall side though maybe. Think he could do a good job of portraying an unlikable chap such as wee Tam.

I like the Hugh Laurie, Russel Crowe and Christian Bale suggestions (as long as the latter doesn't do the 'Batvoice' which he used in the the Batman films and Terminator Salvation).

I also think that Ian Bliss would make a pretty good Covenant.

He definitely has the look, but I'm not convinced of his acting skills either way (I haven't seen him in much).

Viggo Mortensen

Post by Andyhug »

Hey all.

I just registered to say I think Viggo Mortensen would play a damn good Covenant. I'm thinking more of his role in The Road than as Aragorn in LoTR.

I think Danny Bonaduche (Danny from the Partridge Family looks just like Convenant. I don't know about his acting and he might be too short, but his looks are perfect

There is only one option.

Gamecat.

No one on the planet Earth has more on-screen acting experience playing the role of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.

(JK)

All kidding aside, I am on the Hugh Laurie bandwagon.

Weird thing about TC for me: about 75% of the characters I read are seen by my mind's eye as celebrities that I have seen on film or t.v., the other 25% are people that I have actually met in real life that fit the bill. TC is, as far as I can tell, no person which I have ever beheld with my eyes. That almost never happens. If I had to describe him, I would say that he is part young Scottie of of original series Trek, part young Sean Connery, part Anthony Hopkins.

I would also like to add my two cents about Johnny Depp. Johnny Depp can play any role ever conceived by the human mind. I would love to see him pull off the role of TC.
Covenant is Linden Frankenstein's monster.

hugh laurie is excellent for TC. the man has a british accent but does american very well. i thinjk he could a slight southern drawl for covenant and easily get the tortured look down, no sweat. depp on the other hand, i could see him as triock or a bloodguard like bannor or brinn. he can do the impassive emotions well

I love Hugh as an actor...maybe too old, at least for first trilogy? [though lighting and make-up can do a lot more than people think in film, when the actor is willing, not ego-bound]
I think Depp would be absolutely spectacular for Hile Troy. [the quirkiness of the char background, and the intense commitment...yea, he can do that]
No Eric Roberts or Mel Gibson for anything. Just no.

The only problem i see for an actor like depp is people would be upset with him being in 1 or 2 of the movies. audiences wouldn't like that. especially if they haven't read the books

Actor to play Thomas Covenant

Post by Shabble »

Thomas Covenant himself is already playing Gregory House in the American medical drama, "House".
To quote Wikopedia - "Gregory House, M.D., is a protagonist antihero".
He is Thomas Covenant with the of soul of Hugh Laurie.

covenant's actor

 For me,it's christian bale as covenant. he's role in the machinist was inspired. I feel bales dark an cold manner of acting would be precisley whats needed.
love is always paitent and kind;it is never jealous, love is never boastful or conceited;it is never rude or selfish;it does not take offense, and is not resentful.love takes no pleasure in sin but delights in the truth;it is always ready to excuse,to trust,to hope, and to endure whatever comes. love does not come to an end.

Covenant- "And if you fail?" "You already believe you're unworthy. How much more do you think you can stand?"

Brinn- "I will know the truth. Any being who cannot bear the truth is indeed unworthy."

I read the Thomas Covenant books in the early 1980's and loved them.
I've recently re-read them in preparation for reading the last series. Consequently, I have given much thought to who might play Thomas, if ever a movie was made.
I think the best choice would be Daniel Day Lewis. He is a method actor to boot and I'm sure would immerse himself in the role.
He's also got that gaunt, "crazy" look that screams THOMAS COVENANT!!!

The actor cast as Thomas Covenant would most likely need to be a newcomer; someone we have never even heard of. An A-lister like Christian Bale or Daniel Day-Lewis would be great if they were only making ONE film, but I imagine the producers would have some trouble getting a big Hollywood star to sign a ten-film contract, unless the actor happens to be a devoted fan, which is very improbable.

Characters who don't appear in many books or many scenes (for example, Hile Troy or Lena) could be played by more well-known actors.

Completely randomly, I was watching this crapola movie on Syfy called Meteor Apocolypse, and I saw this guy and "That's Thomas Covenant" popped into my head all by itself.

Did not know that. Never heard of him till I went into IMDB. Looking for pictures, I did notice that his hair used to be a bit longer. I think he's also a former romance novel cover model. :)

I thought his facial appearance captured the idea of "his mouth was as strict as a stone tablet" as well as anything I could imagine.

I agree it should be a newcomer, but of known actors, my choice would be Christopher Eccleston.
