Jacob's got a thing for numbers, he used the numbers to guide the candidates along the path that took them to the island. Why those specific numbers, tehy represent the candidatesZarathustra wrote:Well, it's all inconsequential. It's just a damn TV show. But the numbers at the very least seem like a big deal. They pop up everywhere. How does the island control the lottery? Hurley's odometer? Cheerleader uniforms in airports (season 1 finale)? These are phenomena completely outside of the island. Its mystical powers must extend to the entire earth, down to its smallest details. Seems pretty important to me.

Which would make sense if they were the only candidates, but there are a lot of other candidates who were still eligible for candidacy back in times where the numbers - the six specific numbers which we now have attached to the 6 candidates who survived to season 6 - were already known. If the numbers were used by Jacob, why did they not include Kate (51), Rousseau (20), Shannon (31), Juliet (58), etc, etc?

First thing on that page reminded me of something. Apollo Bars - at some point they were something Dharma made that were laced with chemicals and not seen outside of the Initiative. But then Jack gets one from a vending machine in his hospital in the S5 finale.
Edit: and it has Charlie's ring, another thing that seemed significant (Sun found it in Aaron's cot, it was left there for Claire before Charlie died) and never came to anything.

It was against the rules for Ben and Widmore to kill each other's daughter, Widmore broke that rule, and Ben didn't kill Penny. I think that pretty much means any agreement between Ben and Widmore won't be respected by Ben if it's not ocnvenient/advantageous

I'd like to believe it's got to do with the Time Travel, or crashing the plane. Maybe because of the Time travel the numbers were assigned to the Candidates according to "where" they need to be at some point in time (IE: Jack Protector, Sayid sacrificing himself with the bomb or shooting Young Ben, Hurley and Sawyer by Jack's side, Juliette sacrificing herself with Jughead, etc)Murrin wrote:Which would make sense if they were the only candidates, but there are a lot of other candidates who were still eligible for candidacy back in times where the numbers - the six specific numbers which we now have attached to the 6 candidates who survived to season 6 - were already known. If Jack's wife was his original wife, then it was cruel making it into a mystery, so, you'd think she would be someone else.

Unless, of course, fate is somehow telling them that those six candidates need to do the job of protecting together, rather than leaving it to one lonely individual. Jacob may have made more than one mistake, another being carrying on his mother's way of doing things. All of the six candidates are alive in the sideways, so who knows how that affects things in the other reality.
I always felt the numbers being invoked had the power to manipulate the laws of probability. Everyone who used them, got a win, though most of the time, it was an emotional loss because something bad happened to someone close to you to balance the scales.
First couple seasons, I thought this invocation of the numbers, WAS "The Sickness" considering Rousseau introduced it to us, and she dealt with the sickness, with people who obsessed on studying the numbers

Random notes I've been writing myself since watching the episode this morning
Island is seen Scientifically as a plethora of Electro Magnetism.
We have the Spiritual and mythological Story “Across the Sea”, where we learn Smokey is Jacob’s unnamed brother, and molded for primary consideration for relief of “Momma”. Eventually Jacob gets the job and throws his brother into the Island light and out pops Smokey, able to take the Brother’s or other’s forms.
Ben will kill Smokey and become the Protector.
So how do we pull together a Time traveling Island with a strong EMF and a light at the heart of the island?
Does the Light cause the EMF?
Does the EMF cause the light?
And then, of course we have the whispers telling us things like “It’ll come back again”, “Sucks to be dead Sis”, “should we tell them?” and eventually Michael tells us the whispers are the dead .
You can verify if they’re dead via Miles (Hears the dead, from something they left behind) or Hurley (Sees and talks to the Dead. NOTE: Hurley’s dead are only seen by him, Smokey incarnations are seen by everyone. Is this a rule breaker, or did the editing give us a different time alignment for each scene?
Why does It matter that the ATL people are all gathering and remembering? What are they going to contribute to the resolution?
Also Desmond's resistance to EMF matters... ALOT(?)

Maybe. But the numbers pop up even in situations where the candidates can't possibly know about them (like the back of cheerleaders uniforms while the main characters are running in front of them through an airport). This can't explain all it. Something else is going on.sindatur wrote:Jacob's got a thing for numbers, he used the numbers to guide the candidates along the path that took them to the island. This makes more sense. If the laws of probability are being manipulated to pull certain people to the island, this could have tangential effects on things around them.Sindatur wrote:I always felt the numbers being invoked had the power to manipulate the laws of probability.

When Jack drank the water, the expression on his face led me to believe that he was suddenly learning a great deal of information. I don't remember Jacob's "mom" telling him how to do the enchanted water, maybe it's something that you learn with the knowledge granted by drinking it.Kil Tyme wrote:I am hoping the end will make sense of the rest of the season, let alone the whole series. Then I can rewatch season 6 and maybe actually enjoy it 2nd time around. The last two eps have been better and would have probably been outstanding if it weren't for the clock ticking on answering questions.
When Jacob was enchanting the water before he gave it to Jack to drink, top on my mind was "Is he going to teach Jack how to enchant the water for his own replacement?" I have a feeling Jacob will be leaving a piss-poor passdown for Jack. "See ya; don't wanna be ya!" That, or Jacob is faking the water thing. Remember, momma smoke went crazy towards the end of her tour of duty on the island; Jacob may have also. Actually, dooming dozens to die in the airplane crash that brought the candidates to the island is just as bad as momma wiping out the ancients.
Anyway, just from what I saw, I was under the impression that Jack now knows everything about what is going on and why. We just haven't seen it yet, and who knows if we will.
Tonight, the night before the series finale, they showed the 2-hr pilot with the "enhanced" captions, the somewhat annoying but sometimes interesting added info on the bottom of the screen. From watching the pilot a few times, the only change or modification that I noticed was an extra strong sound like a missile during the first "blast"/bump at Jack's flashback to the crash and an extra quick side shot of Jack leaning far to the left at that first blast of turbulance. Of note, the very first time the pilot aired back in 2004, there was a different song during the opening credits: Main theme from "A Thin Red Line"; I have copies of a few of the first airings of some of the first season eps; they don't show those on the web site nor are they on any of the released DVD's. Even at the end of the pilot, the "Interation" voice is different; the orig airing used a voice that was more like the voice used in RL interations that i've heard on shortwave radio. I always liked the orig Interation voice rather than the somewhat stilted voice used ever since. Also, the song again is different as we pan on Kate's face right before the ep ends.
Another minor note of change from the very first airing that is not shown anymore, even on the DVD's, is the shot of Jack calling Locke to help him pull a guy from under the jet engine. In the shot now shown, we see Locke suddenly arrive and help after Jack calls to someone off screen for help, but in the very first airing, when Jack says "Hey you, come over here and give me a hand" we see a shot of Locke stopping his legs briefly before looking up and running towards Jack. In the "Walkabout" ep, Locke is facing to the right, but in that first airing in the pilot, Locke is facing to the left, so I am guessing that is why they pullled that 2 second shot of Locke stopping his feet facing the left from the pilot thereafter: the two shots didn't jive since he was facing different directions when Jack calls for his help. (That prob makes no sense to anyone, but I am anal when it comes to film differences and descripancies, I should have been a "consistancy coordinator" or what every they call it in the business.)
Anyway, those Enhanced spoilers told just about every flipping secret of the people and island, who is going to die, what their secret is, that Jacob brought them to the island, that Jacob and MIB/Smokey are bothers, the white vs black thing, that Jack is the new caretaker, etc; it definitely wasn't for the first time viewer.
