Carol Berg's Daughter of Ancients, book 4 in the "Bridge of D'Arnath" quadralogy. I am eating up this series with a spoon. Good stuff!

3/4 through The Bonehunters. Good stuff, I may be able to catch up in time for The Crippled God, but only if I skip Return of the Crimson Guard...and I'm not sure I could do that.Fist and Faith wrote:I'm 2/3 through it. No, it isn't. Feel free to skip it.
There is one thing from RotCG that will be spoiled by reading Dust of Dreams first, but you'll only get the very simple fact of it (and it bears little relevance to Erikson's side of the story) and none of the details or context, so you won't be missing out.

You've read the Crippled God?
Incidently, if you have, is Stonewielder "necessary" reading beforehand as well? Was it awesome? Does it make up for the fact that I'll read The Last Dark before you?

Heh. Yes, Stonewielder has had a UK release. That's where I got my copy.
No, it is not particularly necessary to read Stonewielder. There is a pretty big event, but it may not be huge for the Erikson books.
And Murrin is wrong about RotCG. By that thinking, you could skip MoI, and read in later books that there was an empire called the Pannion Domin. Or skip DG, and hear about some guy named Coltaine who did this or that. The event in RotCG is MAJOR, and we also gain insights into a few other pretty important and/or interesting characters.

Given that the majority of characters who previously had involvement in the Malazan Empire in Erikson's series have now divorced themselves of its influence (even if they do still keep the name and make use of its reputation) and have no reason to connect back before the series end, I think it's pretty easy to say that Return of the Crimson Guard, which chiefly concerns the central Empire's future, doesn't really have a lot of relevance to the plot of Erikson's series.
Erikson did not write his books expecting that readers would also have read Esselmont's. They are not a single coherent series together. Erikson's series can be read and appreciated without ever reading a word of Esselmont, and it will not affect your enjoyment.

Hahahaha. I gotta say that I think that if you have the opportunity, read RotCG first. Murrin may be right in that they were not intended to be dependent on one another, but I agree with Fist that it's such a major event that knowing it will colour your opinions/feelings about what happens in later Erikson books.
