One of the guilty pleasures of life - phoning your co-worker on Saturday morning when you're working and he isn't. Come on - who hasn't done it and felt just that llttle bit of satisfaction as they say"I'm so sorry, I had no choice, It had to be done, etc, etc "

Have had a VERY tough day at work. Had an interview for a temporary promotion this morning, which went ok(ish), but I'm not holding out much hope for that.
Then in the afternoon, did a couple of psychometric tests in the afternoon in the next stage for permanent promotion. Should get the results in a couple of weeks.
My brain feels frazzled at the moment. Have a tutorial day at college on Thursday to look forward to and then an assignment due 2 weeks later.

I need a game of golf to chill out a bit - hopefully if the weather holds, I'll maybe get a game tomorrow.

I'd like to get in a game as well, but the weather has been uncooperative the last couple of weeks.

I hadn't really wanted to talk about this because it was so traumatic and only Lucimay knows about it so now I am ready. At the end of last year, the bees got a horrible varoa mite infestation and the hive collapsed. We lost all the bees. Needless to say I was devastated. Last week Chris went and got a new colony and we put them in a brand new hive. Our last bees were Italian honey bees which are susceptible to varoa mites but our new bees are Carniolan honey bees which are much more resistant to the mites amongst other brood issues. Yesterday we checked in the hive to make sure it was going well and it is going great. Here are some images of my new babies and our new Queen bee.

Oh no, sorry about the bees, Jenn. :( Glad you got some replacements.

Magickmaker's betta died a week or two ago. She'd bought him when she worked at Petsmart a couple of summers ago, so he lived to a ripe old age, for a betta. Still, I think she was sad to give him the the ol' flusharoo. :(

Can anybody see Jenn's pictures? I'm just getting a thumbnail that says "domain unregistered."

Anyway, nice long weekends coming up for me. Friday & Monday are public holidays, as is next Wednesday, and we've got Tuesday off, so next week is only a two-day week for me. And then the Monday after that is a public holiday too. :D

Lots of bees for me, too. :)

Just put in yesterday for a boatload of vacation time. Between May 1 and mid-June, there will be only one week in which I have to work all five days. The rest are either four-day weeks or vacation weeks. Go me! :) Sadly, I have to get through the rest of this week and next week to get there. But I think I'll survive...

Jenn- sorry. :-(

So cool that you do backyard bee-keeping. (am I right?) Sounds like you really dote on the little buggers... ;) (hope you don't mind me calling them that. you help me to see the cuteness in a baby bee.)

Bee's are so special. They do their work so diligently and we benefit so much from it. They give us sweetness and light. Sweetness from their pure honey and light from their fragrant whispering candles. And as the man said
"The pursuit of perfection then is the pursuit of sweetness and light.....He who works for sweetness and light united works to make reason and the will of God prevail."

Just sent all the required info off (transcript, resume and such), and I've got a pretty good feeling (but anybody would with a 3.8 GPA  ). So in a little over a year I'll have all I need to get paid 45 to 50,000 dollars to sit on my ass, surrounded by books.

Is the one with the yellow marker the queen? For some reason I thought the queens was so much larger than the others. Maybe I've been watching too many Alien movies. The photography is wonderful.

I had a bit of a sadness at work today. We had a client by the name of Asam Azam. She is Pakistani and does the whole deal. Black full burka with a veil across the eye slit. Will not speak to a man. Illiterate, no English. Anyway, Azam ran from her husband because he beat her. Because she ran from her husband, her family excommunicated her. She went into a DV shelter because HER family and her husband tried to throw acid on her twice. She entered the shelter system undocumented, uneducated, and unable to speak English, so basically unemployable. BUT she has two American born children, a boy 8 and a girl 13. Because the kids were American we were able eventually to get her section 8 housing. Her kids were great, a delight. The 13 year old was intelligent and thoughtful and American in every way. The problem begins with the little girl. Azam kept her home from school to translate and speak for her since she would not speak to a man. The kid missed 50% of the school days. The boy missed most school as well. When we finally got Ms. Azam housing I guess she panicked. She had saved a bunch of money, maybe 500.00. The week she was about to sign the lease she spoke to her Muhlah and was able to purchase a divorce. Then the muhlah arranged another marriage over the phone to some guy she never met in Pakistan. She was married to him as his 3rd wife over the phone and he paid for the family to move back to Pakistan. The family left today. I cannot get out of my head the little girl. She did not want to go. At 13, barely educated you know she will be sold into a marriage within the year. My workers said, well she is American and at least someday she can return. Not likely. Her life is set. I keep thinking of that book, Thousand Splendid Suns.

Some days this job is very hard.
The loudest truth I ever heard was the softest sound.

So sorry, Jenn. I'd wondered why you'd stopped talking about the bees - missed the pics and stories. The new guys are pretty cute.

I had to have my eldest cat put to sleep last week, and I'm still a wreck over that. He wasn't a young cat, and he'd been losing weight and energy... took him to the vet and they said it was probably cancer. His condition was going downhill pretty fast, and it was really the only thing I could do for him. I adopted him eleven years ago, no one was sure how old he was then - probably five or six. He'd gone feral after his original owner died - guy had about a dozen cats, all pretty neglected. I'd been working to get them all fixed - the SPCA had a program at the time where they did it for free. I hadn't intended to adopt him - he was a mess when I brought him in, all matted fur and fleas. The vet made some of joke about it, saying that he had no redeeming qualities, and something inside me snapped and I said that I was keeping him. It was pure impulse - came straight from the heart without checking in with the brain, and I never regretted it.

Is Beorn in college yet? I'm not really up to date on how his studies have been going. I remember you mentioning all kinds of tests he was studying for. I only took the ACT (never took the SAT, bwa ha).

In any case; don't worry much about what he wants for a Bachelor's, because a Master of Library Information Science really has no requirement when it comes to a previous degree.

Yes, Lorin, she is the one with the yellow marker and she is a bit longer than the others. Hard to tell with the angle of the image. Sorry about your co-worker drama. That sucks. Sorus, so sorry about your kitteh. I'm hugging you right now in my head. And yes, that's mostly why I got so quiet on the bee front however there would not have been much action all winter anyway until about now. Hugs to all who need them as well.

Beorn's not in college yet; high school graduation is the weekend before elohimfest.

*nod*

Yeah, he took both the SAT and ACT. Showed his overall well-roundedness on the SAT by scoring 710 out of 800 in each of the three sections. He totally rocked the ACT with a composite score of 35.

That's pretty much what we found out when we visited UW's department.

I'm a petrified pile of pain, between redoing my backyard and building a deck with my craftsman buddy Fidel we've been pounding the living crap o/o each other on the tennis court everyday. I'm almost back to game form physically-just need to work on the head, a bit :P
Just weighed myself: I'm 206 down 48lbs from last June just before I went into the hospital. Yowza! But enough about me...

I had an interesting day today. I got into it a bit with Edward, my nemesis and we had a private talk and actually it went very well. We cleared the air on a few things, worked out a plan on how to communicate better, bonded a bit from our discussion but best of all, once hearing my perspective on several things/incidents between us he actually apologized to me and thus our plan for better communication was born. We even shared several laughs. All the associates were all on edge when we ended our heated convo over the radio and even more so when he asked to speak with me in the office. Daniella even asked if I was going to be ok and I said, "Don't worry about me, I'll be just fine." After Edward and I left the office laughing I went back to my project and was immediately innundated with confused employees wanting to know what just happened. Apparently most of Edwards private conversations end up in people stomping out and being even more angry. I just laughed and said, "We worked some stuff out and it was a good thing." Then later Vivian grilled me for the details and I told her that basically he tried to come at me with specific moments that we had butted heads and after explaining my side to him he ended up apologizing and then I had a very detailed with specific incidents discussion with him about his rude demeanor in front of customers and other employees to which he again apologized and agreed that that was something he was trying to work on from previous complaints from other people. I actually told him at one point in that discussion, "Seriously, you need to get in touch with your warm fuzzy lovey side and learn to smile a lot more because it's not just me who finds you incessantly rude." and he said he knew and that sometimes he is in touch with his warm fuzzy side but he's not there to make friends and I responded with a comment about, well, being rude just makes you resentful enemies where as common courtesy and respect will earn you respect in return and rather than making you look like an ass in front of customers it will make you look good which is important in the retail environment. Anyway, we shall see what happens. I do feel like we cleared the air on several things that needed to be cleared and I feel happy about our conversation.
