I can see how it's useful as a communication tool, but it just weirds me out in general. And don't even get me started on Twitter. 8O

lorin, you know, i understand the time suck thing. and i understand if you're annoyed at some of the things people post, etc. but...i gotta tell ya, this
is not very kind to those of us who find it useful. kinda broad and sweeping
generality.

to me it's just another forum, except my brother is on that one. and he posts pics of my nieces. and people that i knew back in Lex are on there, people that i LIKE keeping in a bit of contact with. and my best friend who lives in australia is on there and i get to watch a bit of her daily life. and my goddaughter is on there and i get to see what she's up to (even if it's inane teenager shit) and my best friend in albuquerque is on there and i get to hear some of her teaching triumphs and see what her kids in her classes post to her, and my guildmates from wow are on there and i get to see a bit more of their lives than just what their wow toon looks like ( of course sorus posts a bit more here than there so i see her here), and some musician guys that i used to play with back in the day are on there and i get to stay in contact with them more than i have in the last 20 years, and moreover, they get to see what I'M doing now, and maybe read some of my pomes, and we have conversations about music we used to like and stuff we like to listen to now, and stuff like that...and well..i could go on about why i'm there and what i like about it and how i use it.

i don't think i'm being narcissistic and i haven't found any of MY friends to be that way either. of course my brother posts about his farts. that's what little brothers do (even when they're 40!!)

and ever once in a while people post things (like HERE) that touch me profoundly or make me think about something a little differently or help me in some way or other, which is why i made my wall of interest. because i WANTED to share stuff that i think about with my friends.

so..while i appreciate that there are people (like you and sorus) who are not really into using fb and would rather remain a bit more anonymous, please try to see it from my perspective for half a minute and appreciate why i (and others) might be there other than our bad tastes and need to be stars.

Didn't intend any offense or aim criticism at anyone here, was just saying it was nice to see that someone shared my opinion. I know my opinion of FB is in a pretty tiny minority, and I do acknowledge that it can be a valuable communication tool. What people do with their free time is their business, and again, I am in no position to criticize.

You are right, I generalized. I apologize if you read it as directed at you. I was only talking about me and my behavior online no one else's. The other thing I should mention is I have a lot of coworkers and their kids and fosterkids on facebook who drive me nuts. It is not about the people here. Boy, I am making a lot of boo boos these days. Just another reason I should spend less time online. Anyway, sorry if I hurt any feelings.

Kudos on the wordplay, Cambo!

Advocating? Not in any general sense. I only know what is real for me (someone who is not and will never be a buff fellow) and for the circle of those closest to me. While I may not necessarily advocate bi-sin (heh...), I suggest remaining open to the idea that one might tri-sin and see if it works for you.

OK, even that is not quite what I want to say, despite the clever word play. The very word "sin" bugs me in this context. "Do what you will, so long as it harms none" is espoused by the Wiccan Rede. 1 John 4:7-8, says, "Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love." Philosopher John Stuart Mill states "The sole purpose of law should be to stop people from harming others and that should people want to participate in victimless [acts]...then they should not be encroached in doing so."

In the case of lorin, all of us who have read her writings here for the last few years (much less those who have met her in RL) know how much she yearns for a true and stable bond with someone. How much she has given to others...and how little she has gotten back from all that investment of her personal, financial, and emotional substance. She deserves better! I was only suggesting that she not close off a potential vector of pursuit of the happiness and fulfillment that is her right.

Especially if (as she was apparently saying) she was considering that "sauce for the goose was not sauce for the gander." As it turns out, she meant that in jest.

come on ladies, you know me (maybe sorus a little better than lorin but you know me.) my feelings are not hurt. i am not offended. and i am not angry.
i did not feel either of your comments were personally directed at me nor did i personally feel criticized.
and once again, i understand how BOTH of you feel about fb.

what i felt, after reading your comments lorin, was misunderstood.
and i just HATE feeling like that. so i was compelled to say so.

i missed roky erickson. :( had the day wrong and i am grinding away at work anyway. i am working 17 out 18 days on this stretch. just picked up more ot tonight when my captain called to see if i would pick up some holes in the schedule.

in two weeks i have school for the week. bo-ring but necessary. but i do get to shoot. pistol, rifle, shotgun. and i will run into some folks from my previous unit to gossip with.

as a reward for all my hard work and much overtime i have been thinking branching out for a concert.

Guns 'n' Roses

good seats are 75 apiece. if julie agrees i will offer for my friend Sly - pay for his ticket to go. I love the band and i miss hard rock. :)if he can't make it - then julie would have to go to a show she could care less about. november 4th. will have some answer tomorrow.

After a month of procrastinating, I finally painted the half-bathroom yesterday. Trim work still needs to be done, and installation of the new mirror and towel rack, but the biggest task is done.
The sense of accomplishment is worth the after-smell of latex paint in my nose.

From my experiences on FB, I can say that young folks on facebook form a pretty bizarre (and often disturbing ...though sometimes amusing) social system with a pretty unusual set of boundaries.* 8O

And that's in spite of the fact that most of the teens I'm friended with are the "good kids" (at least on the outside, right?) growing up in a totally different region of the socio-economic spectrum!

(So all that to say... what it sounds like you're talking about would probably give me a huge, enormous headache!)

* Maybe the fact that I was homeschooled through HS makes it all the weirder, more foreign, and incomprehensible at first sight!

Guilty as charged.

For me, being on FB has been a weird experience. My RL has been pretty compartmentalized. I grew up in a city where we didn't have any family. Then I went away to college and deliberately picked a dorm where I wouldn't know anyone from high school. Then for the first 20 years of my professional life, I changed jobs, complete with a new city, every few years. Now I'm in a totally different field. And of course, now everybody is scattered to the four winds, because that's what we do these days. And I also have Watch friends all over the world.

So eventually I joined Facebook (after a fair amount of kicking and screaming...). And over time, I've reconnected with people from all of those parts of my life: a bunch of people I went to high school with, family members I never see, one woman I've known since first grade, a ton of people I used to work with in broadcasting (I've reunited 4/5 of the members of the 1981 WHTN-WKEE news team!), some folks from the neighborhood we lived in while my kids were growing up, and a whole bunch of Watchers. I connected with my oldest friend last summer by finding her sister on FB. All of those compartments of my life have merged in my FB friends list -- which is a little disconcerting to me, particularly when a friend from one part of my life starts a conversation with someone from another part of my life on my wall. 8O I don't object -- it's just a little mind-blowing, that's all.

So yeah, people post stupid stuff, and some folks feel like they have to chronicle every move they make, and the people who were annoying before I joined FB are still just as annoying. But the benefits seem to be outweighing the bad stuff so far.

Altho Zuckerberg is doing his best to tick me off, with the constant redesigns and his penchant for mining data to sell to advertisers.... (I go back and forth about the data mining. On one hand, I hate the invasion of my privacy by people whose products I have no interest in. OTOH, my tastes and interests are so far removed from those of the average 50-something female that anything they *do* find out about me is liable to screw up their results. )

That's not a penchant Ali- it's just his business model. Which is why anyone who actually thinks FB will ever charge its users doesn't understand our role in that model. We are not the customers. We are the product being sold. It would be absolutely the worst thing Zuckerburg could do to start charging us and scare away huge portions of his stock.

Spot-on, Cambo.

Moo!
(In other words, this is why there are virtually no original posts on my wall, very few commercial site "Like"s, etc. Pretty thin gruel for the data fishers. Having been an IT geek for over 30 years and a DARPANET user before "Al Gore invented the internet", I know what they can do with the data they collect!)
