Might be, but I'm fairly sure that I tried a reread of 'The Pawn of Prophecy' and failed to find it there (or finish the book. Is it just me or are there too many characters in that novel (and too unsympathetic!).

I think it might be later in series, a story told by one of the goodie wizards about when they first found whadyacallim their god?

That might explain it, cos I've been bamboozled by not being able to find it at the start of any of the books. Bugger! That means I'll have to have another run at the series  (or maybe not!).

I seem to recall that this was from the second or third book of the Belgariad, when Garion is first trying to learn to use the 'Will and the Word". Its a vague memory but I do remember something like that.

Uss, that's definitely from somewhere in the Belgariad universe. Either from when Garion was being trained somewhere in the first couple of books (IIRC, he doesn't get any proper training in the first), or it may be from Garath's training days in the prequel "Belgarath the Sorcerer." Yes, I am a closet Eddings fan  . He's my popcorn fantasy guy.

The library doesn't have Deadhouse Gates atm, but I picked up Memories of Ice. Any reason I shouldn't read that one first? Spoilers and such? They're set simultaneously right?

Deadhouse Gates sucks in comparison ;)

Nah, there's no reason why you shouldn't read Memories of Ice before Deadhouse Gates.

Originally I would have said DHG was better, but now I think they're both excellent.

(Oh yeah...I'm doing some Heinlein...the little old ones, like Orphans of the Sky and Between Planets.

These books are so short that modern novels have chapters longer than them...what changed...?

Good question. I read a novel recently that didn't have any chapters at all. There were section breaks, but no chapters. 8O Before I figured it out, I just kept reading and reading and reading and... I thought I was gonna hyperventilate. (If I could remember which book it was, I'd warn y'all. )

Franz Kafka's The Trial was odd like that. Very large paragraphs (some more than a page long), infrequent section breaks, it was hard to find any places to stop. The paragraphs aren't so surprising when you consider that its translated from German, though.

V for Vendetta.
Seen the film adaptation many times, ashamed to admit I've never read the comic book.
Xmas present from a friend is rectifying that!

Rereading Night of Knives, and ordered Stonewielder. (And the new Pratchett, and the last Auel book...I started them 20 years ago...damned if I won't finish, even if I know what it'll be like.)

Wait...

The last Auel Earth's Children is out? Or is this pre-orders? If out, that was actually pretty quick for her, yes?

Halfway through Memories of Ice, and got ahold of Deadhouse Gates finally. MOI already has me reading in big breathless chunks.
Spoiler
The confrontation between Anomander Rake, Brood, Whiskeyjack, Silverfox and Quick Ben? Wow! And the revelations about Brood's Hammer, Paran being the new King of the Cards (or whatever his actual title is)? Double wow!

MoI is extraordinary beyond the telling. In little, personal ways, and in huge, sweeping ways. Insanely wonderful.

Yup, MoI is amazing. 8)

Menolly, are you saying that another Earth's Children book is coming after the one that was released a few months ago? I was under the impression that this one completed the series. Haven't read the new one -- haven't heard much in the way of good things about it, unfortunately. :(

I'm sort of between books right now. I read Shara_Lunison's thesis, which is actually a YA fantasy novel, so I guess that counts -- so there. I also finished reading Legends of Old Bohemia -- I bought it because it has a version of "The Maidens' War" in it, and I'd only ever read the first couple of stories, so I thought I ought to go ahead and finish it, finally. Might read P.C. Hodgell's "God Stalker Chronicles" next. I got it as a WFC freebie -- it's an omnibus of the three novels in the series. No idea what it'll be like....

No, the one that came out recently was the last one. Guess Menolly hadn't heard about it. I thought you had read it Ali. Must have been Duchess.

(It's been out for most of this year already Menolly. The Land of Painted Caves. I know it's going to be middling bad. But like I said...gotta finish the series. )

Master of the Deck, Cambo. :D

Anyway, I'm onto GotM now.

Yup, Av, it was Duchess. I guess we were talking about it at the Hangar over the summer. It was her lack of a ringing endorsement  coupled with a similar opinion from a neighbor that's kept me from reading it.

oh yeah, I remember that now. I purposely skipped the spoilers because like Av, I plan to read it anyway.
...and then I forgot it was released.

I need to hunt it down at the library.

If it is available at a used bookstore, it will be perfect for me when I'm admitted for the radioactive iodine uptake. I was initially told I could bring both laptop and cell with me, but that has now been rescinded. And they will confiscate anything I do keep in the room once checked in, so only things I don't mind leaving behind will be allowed.

...at least there will be an in-room t.v. and room phone. But my internet addiction is going to be sorely pressed the two/three days I'm isolated in hospital.
