We're safe and sound. But a church a couple miles away got bombed today. :( Some people just don't believe in "Peace on earth, goodwill toward all".

I saw that on the news and thought of you. Please stay safe.

BTW I heard just the other day that someone in my company had been kidnapped in Nigeria again.

Cripes. I know a doctor who was kidnapped, shot in the arm in the process. He was with the kidnappers for several days and chatted them up. He asked how they got into their life of crime. One of them said how he had gone to welding school, but then lacked funds to set up a shop, so he "went into the kidnapping business", just like it was shoe repair or carpentry. He appealed to them from a religious standpoint and their thing was, they would go to confession and be forgiven. When the ransom money arrived, they PRAYED over it. By then the doctor's arm was seriously infected, he had to be flown the the US for surgery. Honestly, the human capacity for self-deception and self-justification is breathtaking-- and it's not limited to M*slims. I am ashamed at what passes for "Christianity".

Perhaps you can speak to this better than I, but I've heard that the British, being above working with the natives, actually ruined Nigeria by paying the locals NOT to work back when it was a colony. Of course, the expectation that whiteman pays us to not work continues to this day. Perhaps the whole kidnapping thing is a part of that 'pay me to behave and keep out of the way' thing. Sad, really.

What the British didn't screw up, Shell and other oil companies destroyed. Most of the kidnaping of expatriates is in the South, where Shell et al came in, promised schools, roads, and clinics, raped the countryside, poisoned the water table, ruined the farmland, and did not come through on development promises. So there are no jobs; not even fishing and farming, which is what they did before the oil pipelines and gas flares. So you have the "kidnapping business", and then there's the pipeline-tapping business which results in worse pollution and huge explosions in which dozens burn to death, ... you begin to see MEND's point.

Right here, but for a short time only. Thanks for not forgetting. I am touched.

...with the emphasis on the "mostly," I think!

I think I even find Mallory's to have the potential for stress... (even if I approve of people's creative solutions somewhat!)

And quiet.
I've got like 10 different plans to do something about the "quiet" problem, but have yet to actually do something.
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
