My worst hangover was due to Jager bombs. So kids, don't drink Jager bombs exclusively fro five hours straight.

I drink a lot of boubon. Current faves are Baker's, Rowan's Creek, Stagg, and Jack Daniel's single barrell. (Although I know the latter is not bourbon. I dislike Booker's and HATE Blanton's. I also like Woodford, Knob, and Eagle Rare. I actually drink a lot of Woodford due to its availability at restaurants, but I've noticed a lot of inconsistency in it lately.

I take it on the rocks. Modest amount of ice. I prefer a couple of large cubes, but I often end up with many small ice chips as I am often on the road.

Trveler's tip: Never order a double on your first visit to a bar or from a new bartender unless you can see that they have a measuring device installed on the bottles- you never know when you're going to run into a bartender that's cool or just doesn't give a fuck and hooks you up to begin with.

Y'know, "locals" bars might be the last places left that take "be kind to strangers" literally and regularly. It's amazing how often the first drinks are doubles in places you've never been before, so I second Harbingers tip.

Just wanted to clarify that the Stagg I mentioned is George T. Stagg, not Red Stag. Stagg is the pinnacle of Buffalo Trace's efforts thus far.

Also, thinking on it further, I have to say that the Jack Daniel's single barrel is great. Year after year, it is consistent in smoothness and flavor. It has a pleasant warming bite. You can usually find it for $42-$47. Spendy, but not outrageous.

Oh, yeah. For a cheap bottle of good bourbon, you can't beat Old Grand Dad.

If you want cherry flavor, there's Cherry Heering. That stuff is yummy.

As far as straight, hard liquor goes, I've tried many brands of Scotch, including brands that were recommended to me as high quality, and I still don't like it.

I do enjoy nice high quality vodkas, though. Don't give me any of the cheap stuff, I like Stolichnaya, Grey Goose, and similar.

that's interesting...maybe vodka and scotch conflict in the taste/pleasure centers, cuz I dislike vodka more and more as time passes, even good ones. I'd take a cheap scotch over pricey vodka, which is saying something considering how bad cheap scotch can be.
The exception is Bloody Mary's [think I've mentioned that]...something in the tomato/spice/celery subdues whatever part of the vodka flavor it is that offends me.

Did you ever try scotch-n-soda? Quite a few peeps I know who can't stand it straight or rocks like it that way.

Vodka, in my humbly correct opinion, is mostly a mixing spirit. The true sign of a 'good' vodka is that is alcohol and water, nothing more. As a result, it can be mixed in with whatever drink you want to turn it into an adult beverage.

Gin, scotch, whiskey, etc, on the other hand, have flavors. These can be mixed in with other drinks or savored on their own.

I love vodka, but hate shooting it. Potato vodka is terrible for the price.

No, but that's a good suggestion. Maybe I'll try it that way next time I have the opportunity.

You're entitled to your opinion, Orlion. :)

Really high quality vodka tastes good unadulterated.

Cheap vodka does not.

Whereas my favorite way of drinking vodka (only quality stuff, Ms. Mary) is by the ice cold shot in a hollowed out cucumber shot "glass."

Agreed, but nothing beats a kosher for Passover potato vodka for making home made vanilla extract for Passover use, if your level of kashrut allows.

Agreed.

Cucumber shot glass Menolly? That's revolting.

I did however just see tequila shot glasses that were frozen and hollowed out limes, which I thought was a damn good idea. :D

That does sound good. All you need is a bit of salt 'round the rim and you're set. :)

Speaking of vodka, I think it is supremely nasty. I also think pink grapefruit juice is extremely nasty. Somehow, when mixed, the two nastinesses cancel each other out and it's a great drink. The Greyhound.

The great thing about vodka is that if it cocts over $20.00 for a fifth, you are probably not gonna have a hangover,

Add some cranberry juice to your vodka and grapefruit juice, and you have the yummy drink called a seabreeze.

I used to think straight vodka was nasty, too. That was before I tasted really good vodka.
