Sarge, I hope you feel better soon.... I'm not good at being sick LOL.
Rdhopeca - Dont beat yourself up about what you have done in the past that you cant change. You can change your future. Ive known plenty of people that had or have diabetes and there are so many things you can do to make it better. Make a list of those and work on them one at a time.
Exercise is a key ingredient but its a lifestyle change. What I would recommend is not trying to do everything all at once. Its overwhelming to make so many changes at once and too easy to fall off the wagon when you do that. As you exercise you will be building muscles and endurance. That helps with your 'sitting calorie burn'. Most people dont realize that there is a such thing.
Start going to the Gym every day or every other day. Start with walking on a treadmill (preferably one with a TV so you have something to take your mind off your walk. Walk for 30 mins (minimum) each time you go for two weeks, then pick up the speed to a faster walk but not jogging. Do that for a few weeks. After 4 to 6 weeks of walking you should be ready to bring up the speed a little more but don't over do it. Work on changing your mindset from 'I hate having to do this and its not fun', to "I like going for my walk to relax and clear my mind". The mental part of exercise is the thing that gets most people. Keep in mind this isnt something you are going to do until you get better, its something you will continue to do from now on. Make it part of your daily routine and find ways to enjoy it. At some point you will want to add a light jog for 5 to 10 mins to your walk.
Then after you have been exercising for a few months, add the next thing from your list of things you want to change to control your Diabetes.

I've taken to the woods for an hour every morning before work. I used to use my ipod but recently I have begun to enjoy the sounds of the woods more than the sounds of the ipod. That's exactly what more people should do. I run at the Gym when its either too hot or too cold. But when the temp is more moderate, my wife and I run in our neighborhood or go to the local park and run there. We run and walk... we run for 3 miles (about 30 mins) and then we walk at least another 1 to 2 miles to cool down.lorin wrote:I've taken to the woods for an hour every morning before work. I seem to be in a mood for change lately. Finished clearing out most of the old crap in my room over the last couple days. Trying to manage my time more at home. Trying to improve my diet a little.
There's the holiday plans, the ongoing looking around at houses which is accompanied by wondering what the heck I want to do with my life. And more recently a desire to buy new stuff.
Opinions!:
I've had a Playstation 2 since around when they first came out in 2000. I mostly use it as my DVD player, and now I'm thinking of replacing it. Is a PS3 worth getting as a blu-ray player, if I'm only going to very rarely use it for games (and mostly then for old PS2 games, sometimes even PS1)?
Edit: Ah, crap, it's not backwards compatible, is it? That is just no good.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....I took my kid to the playground at a park recently, and there was a kid there dressed up as Darth Vader. It scared Desmond at first, but as the kid took off the mask, I tried to let him know that it was just a kid and not to be afraid. The Darth kid has very long hair and very feminine features, so I assumed the kid to be a girl. I saw that the parents are hippies, each with long dreads, and heard one of them say "come here, boy," or something to that effect. He/she was going by the name Anakin that day, so I couldn't tell if they were playing to that, or if the kid's name was actually Anakin, or what.
So this kid took to Desmond right away and kept wanting to play with him, which freaked out Desmond as he hasn't had a ton of interaction with kids, and the ones he has met have pretty much kept their distance.
We watched The Empire Strikes Back the other night as Desmond was talking about Star Wars. All he has seen so far is the original Star Wars (A New Hope), so I figured it was time to continue the journey. He enjoyed it, but he's only 2 1/2, and I'm sure only understood some of what was going on. But he did keep referring to "Darth Vader from the park," which is now sticking. A companion to Jenny from the Block.
We went to the same playground the other night, and we saw the same kid who greeted Desmond very excitedly and drug him around the playground. I asked the kid's name, and he/she said "Freedom." Which gets us no closer. So we have a playground Pat situation going on.
But Freedom is obsessed with Star Wars. When they were swinging together at some point, he/she kept singing the Star Wars theme and the Cantina theme, and kept talking about this or that episode.
Signs point to boy (based upon how the parents referred to him/her in masculine terms during the Anakin persona day), but appearances are girl, so I'm not sure what to do if we run across this kid on the playground again. Anyone with a suggestion on how to answer this conundrum?

I'm guess I'm wondering if it's really so important at this point to know the kid's gender. If your kid keeps playing with this other kid, it's bound to come out eventually. And just from my own son, I know that random meetings he was just in it for whatever fun he could have with kids he met and he didn't even found out what the kid's name was. (Girls are different, it seems to be required to get a complete backstory on each other within the first 15 minutes - at least, based on my daughter!

I agree with MsMary, Cag. Unless you can convince Des to play doctor with this kid -- which I'm not sure I'd recommend
-- you're probably not going to find out without striking up a gender-neutral conversation with the parents to see if they cough up a pronoun. ("Gee, your kid's really into Star Wars." "Yeah, he/she asks to watch the movie so often, we're sick of it...")

Don't worry about the kid's gender, Cagbro. It's irrelevant at this age.
I got my lockpick kit today. I'm excited to start practicing this weekend.

I know it doesn't matter ultimately, but it's so hard searching for a pronoun when discussing this kid. And if you've ever seen the It's Pat sketches on Saturday Night Live, I'm feeling the same sort of obsession in wanting to know. Not that it matters, but I just wanna know. And it's possible we won't even see the kid again.
I mainly brought it up because it is a funny situation and wanted to share.

It is, but thankfully there is the intarweb to allow me explanation. The fact that I wear a long black coat already makes me suspect, so going ahead and doing something like that will get me barred from the playground, and I like playgrounds. And I'll end up on a list I don't want any part of.

cags- wow, I got nothin'...
The gender-neutral conversation-starting suggestion sounds pretty sensible.
It'll be hilarious if they're all like "Freedom this" and "Freedom that."
You're lookin' at your kiddo and seeing the potential for friendships with those alongside him. Tis beautiful.
It makes a kinda amusing story, though.
Because of the awwwkkwardness, I guess.
MsMary- I find your observation about girls / "or at least your daughter" -hilarious-. (in a good way, I think)

I've been super busy with things. And getting sick. I have laryngitis now, so my son absolutely loves that I can't yell at him.
Oh, and we got a dog for Christmas. His name is Speck, he's 9 months old, and is a German Short-Haired Pointer/Australian Cattle dog mix. He's the best freaking dog ever and I love him so much. He's a rescue. We adopted him from a shelter that operates strictly out of foster homes. He was owned by an elderly gentleman, but wasn't able to keep him at his assisted living complex. So he gave him up to a shelter. It was a high kill shelter in SC, so Speck's foster mom received a call from one of the people who work there begging her to take Speck because he had 12 hours to live. Poor guy.
He's alive and well with us now, and has been the best thing for our son.
I will be posting pics of him in the album later!
Edit - Pics are up!
