Oscar nominations - what a crock
Well like the Globes, the Academy have done nothing to change the view that the Oscars are becoming less credible each year.
This year I am astounded that "the girl with the dragon tattoo" has received 5 nominations. What an incredible insult to the excellent movie this film has ripped off which recieved none despite getting a whole host of awards and nominations from pretty much everywhere else.
That Noomi Rapace who was truly excellent was not even considered whilst Rooney Mara is nominated for doing what amounts to a cover version is a disgrace and demonstrates how insular and isolated these people are.

The Oscar Awards are made by Hollywood people for Hollywood people; the public's opinion and ticket sales are irrelevant.
Originality is rare in Hollywood; for evidence of this look at how many movies they cover from foreign movies (you note The Girl... but there are hundreds of others) or how many movies are being remade. Red Dawn remake? Srsly? Judge Dredd remake? wtf? Footloose remake? why are you wasting time and money on this?
I don't pay any attention to the Oscars and I recommend that no one else do so, either.

No argument there Hashi, however the timing of this so soon after the original and only just after the end of the three part series of movies is a bit of an affronty to the makers and actors of original who's efforts were critically and publically acclaimed.
Remake a movie from the 50s....yeah OK its a new world by comparison, but a remake just two years apart that's a cover version and in other artistic fields is know as a fake!

They made such a b****s of Judge Stallone that it screamed for a remake. The value of this remake is that it can't be worse than the original.
Judge Dredd - Rob Schneider = 10x better
Judge Dredd - (Rob Schneider + Sylvester Stallone) = 100x better
Judge Dredd - (Rob Schneider + Sylvester Stallone) + Karl Urban= 1000x better
They surely couldn't make it worse, could they

At least Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka had a backstory...

The only thing I liked in Dredd was the robot, who also turned in the best performance. But yeah, Dredd sans Stallone is definitely a move in the right direction.ussusimiel wrote: Judge Dredd - Rob Schneider = 10x better

Great Frith no. I enjoyed it, but the original is just so brilliant. My wife gave me whatever anniversary Blu-Ray edition it is, with lots of little bits and bobs. Watching it again, I'm just further impressed with how good it is. And it came with a book called Pure Imagination, which I'm nearly done reading. It talks about the making of the film, and it is really enjoyable. But yeah, the Tim Burton version has none of the wit of the original, even if there is a scene or two that is closer to the book. I could go on (and have before) about many key differences that make the Tim Burton film inferior.sgt.null wrote:anyone like the last Charlie and the CHocolate factory more than the original?

Ok, I have to give you that possibility anyway. (It could be worse of course, but maybe it won't be.)ussusimiel wrote: Ah now, come on!

Never heard of Karl Urban, maybe that's a good thing. If the helmet comes off though, it's over.

i don't mind remakes - i'd like them to tackle Damnation Alley - but I want some reason for the update. some of the films i love are restricted by the ability of their time - but still very enjoyable.

Go rewatch The Two Towers, in which Karl Urban played Eomer.Avatar wrote:Never heard of Karl Urban
Every time I go to Movie Trading Company (a good place for inexpensive movies) I check the new release wall. There are always movies about which I have heard nothing, either because they were that obscure (some movies are limited release only and get shown in only a handful of cities) or were that bad that they left the theaters after only two or three weeks.

McCoy in Star Trek and also a bad guy in one of the Bourne movies. He's also played the 2IC in the Riddick Chronicles and is the FBI guy in the recent Bruce W movie; Red.
