We had a quake back in the early 90's that was hard enough to slam doors in the house. I was all alone at home watching the first Red Dragon movie, and it scared the hell out of me.
I live close enough to the New Madrid Fault to be a little worried. After all, back in 1812 this fault generated an earthquake powerful enough to change the course of the Mississippi River. The quake is estimated to have been a 8.0 on the Richter scale.
Anyhow, scientists predict that the fault has a 90% probability of generating a 6.0 quake by the year 2040.
We had two significant shakes today. Both 4.0 and both centered in Berkeley. I felt both. The first one from early afternoon I was in the office with my boss at work and it was shaking and Kin said, "I hate those SUV's in the parking garage." I said, "Kin, this is an earthquake." He laughed and denied it. Then tonight while posting in my blather blog we had another one.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

If you happen to be in the boonies [for instance a hot springs deep inside desert parklands] earthquakes are actually a lot of fun except for being over too soon.
It's only bridges, tall buildings, and buried gas lines that make them scary.

I was out in the open in the '89 quake, and it probably wasn't as scary as it would have been indoors... but the hours it took to get home, seeing all the damage along the way and not knowing what I'd find when I got home... that was the scary part. No cell phones back then, no way to contact anyone.
The ones yesterday didn't seem too bad for me - we're overdue for a big one. My cats were acting all weird and agitated right before the second one yesterday - 'cats acting weird' is probably not a reliable barometer for much of anything, though some people say that pets can sense earthquakes.

Puts it in perspective, doesn't it? Our little East Coast tremor last month only killed a few finials on top of the National Cathedral. Best luck to those folks in their recovery efforts.
