Yeah, I enjoyed it. Loved the Seguleh.

Think Murrin is right...somebody talking about their name being a First Empire word for Anvil, and that it was the name of one of the First Empire armies.

I don't think the Tyrant was human...his body was just the last whatever that had that mask forced onto them.

Was surprised about the Imass though...I don't remember his name, but he's the one Harllo gave the bones to...was he not recognising him? Or just being dismissive of the current body?

Also...uh...when did the moon get healed? How come I missed that?

And Karsa living in the wilderness outside the city? Brief appearance, but interesting.

Hmmm...anything else? Oh yes...interesting reference to Gardens of the Moon. But in GotM, the gardens aren't in Moon's Spawn...they're on the actual moon, as told by Apsalar to Crokus IIRC.

It's not 'healed', per se, towards the end of Toll the Hounds, the pieces kinda collapse back together (gravity and such, I guess). It's still hazy.

In OST they call it things like "renewed." They seem to think it's fixed.

Oh, I just remembered...this book also marks the first time "flayed" is used in a correct context. I was starting to think neither Erikson nor Esslemont knew the difference between that and "flailed."

Seen them both mix those two words up, more than once.

Renewed is hardly 'fixed'. Or rather, it's a different moon made from a bunch of parts from the original. I don't know how else they would describe such an event.

Finished. Yeah I'm that pathetic . I liked it, far more than Esselmonts last installment. 2 of my very favorite characters make a small appearance, I was very surprised ( pleased)at a certain key players reappearance, and I agree that Kruppe is a character best left to Erikson.

yeah kruppe definitely better left to erikson. all of his scenes sort of jarred me right out of the story.

was gonna ask why vorcan chained herself too but then read thru the posts and thanks to whoever that was that answered that one for me.

i did love the ending.

i got totally choked up and weepy when blinded hektar (i think his name was) went full tilt at the segulah and benden sitting there holding his dead body when the smoke cleared and not allowing Little to take his body away. and i was on the bus while reading it! lol had to look away out the window and wipe away tears. just a brief moment but it got me in the gut. i liked that whole benden (butcher) thread, i guess because i liked watching a malazan soldier becoming a...well, a malazan soldier.


yes i still like erikson's writing better but i enjoyed the book.

This book was very cool. I agree with others who say Esslemont is nowhere near the writer Erikson is, especially when it comes to Kruppe.

SPOILERS AHEAD

But I forgive that because of all the fascinating information and the very cool plot. Loved learning about the Seguleh's ancient history, loved Jan's struggle to come to terms with what they had been and what they'd become, and his rejection of the Tyrant. I thought, I hoped, that we were going to see a duel between Traveller and the Second. I don't know why that would have happened, but there could've been a reason dammit! But Dassem becoming the First was perfect.The climactic battle between the Moranth and the Seguleh was appropriately epic.

I'm enjoying Esslemont's books (read all apart from Stoneweilder now); while I'm well aware as I'm reading he's an average writer compared to Erikson, I love drinking in all the information and events about the parts of the world and the stories Erikson barely touches on.

And I've loved the Seguleh since they were introduced, so OST gets a big tick from me!

Agreed. Best part was learning all that stuff about them. Erikson barely gives you anything. And I know people who prefer Esselmont's writing to Erikson's.

But you mustn't skip Stonewielder.
