Nominations for Best Debate (Tank, Close, whatever), 2011
Nominations accepted:
Is this Self Defense?
Does presenting an ID disadvantage the poor and minorities? (really cutting it close on this one. would be better to put in for 2012, imo - [Syl])
Transgender Uncertainty

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

The chair recognizes the Gentleman from La Mancha.
Correct. I suppose a single debate carried on through a couple threads could qualify, though.

Does presenting an ID disadvantage the poor and minorities?
This one comes in just under the wire, with all of the debate actually occurring in 2012 (and still rumbling on ). Still, I really enjoyed it, (even if it got (gets) a bit fractious at times ) as it raised quite a few interesting points of contention while still fully hashing out the main issue.

Since the decision was made to include 2010, I remember really enjoying this thread that SerScot started [even if it isn't as "important" issue-wise:] so nominate it:

the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

I nominate the "Greed" thread: kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21527
Twas an oft-overlooked problem that everyone experiences, and an accessible debate - the "problem"(s) could be approached from many angles.

"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor
"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."
-Elisabeth Elliot, Preface, "A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael"
