Thanks for all your support and suggestions.

As it happens, yesterday she called me saying she wanted to "sound me out" about something. Not worth getting into the details, but she was looking for me to validate some excuses she was making for not doing something. I call them "excuses" because in my mind that's what they were. There are times when she's clearly using her mental health issues as an excuse. So I gave her my honest opinion rather than doing what I know she wanted me to do--tell her what she wanted to hear. I was nice about it, but honest. She then got cross at me telling me she didn't want my opinion, she just wanted me to listen. I told her that I thought the expression "sound you out" meant she wanted to know what I thought (although I could be wrong about that!). Long and the short of it is, she hasn't contacted me since. Very unusual for her but <shrug> ...I just don't care right now.

People are right about her child being in a dangerous situation. That said, the day after she cut herself up I was at her house for most of the day baby-sitting her. Her daughter had gone out to a kids party. The psychologist who had assessed her in emergency the night before turned up. He was accompanied by a woman who was from social services. I didn't stay in the room while they were talking but listened in from the room next door. So, to keep it simple, now she's kinda "on the books". Her daughter will probably be removed if she does anything like that again. The good thing is that my "friend"'s parents live here as well and they do try their best to make sure the welfare of their granddaughter.

And Effaeldm, she actually does work sporadically in plantation forests cutting off dead limbs etc. And she lives out of town on a semi rural property and so collects wood from paddocks, has to cut up the wood etc for the fire. And she's creative, does heaps drawing etc. The issue at the moment (as far as I see it) is that she's using it as an attention seeking thing. This last episode came about because her girlfriend refused to answer he texts and so my friend threatened to cut herself and when her girlfriend didn't respond she did it.

Anyway, enough of my prattle. Thanks again everyone. It's nice to be able to come back here and get such support (particularly since I've been fairly absent on KW for the last couple of years).

Come on, admit it: you're just trying to get rid of me for another couple of years. I'm sure it was your fault that I went away last time! ;)

I hope this will not be taken the wrong way, but catching up on this thread reminds me of how much I have to be grateful for. That's not to say my life doesn't have issues, plenty of those-- but there's a saying in Hausa about if you are thinking about your life it's better to look at someone who has it worse than you and be thankful, and not at those who have it better and be envious.

 Hugs for all.

Interesting you should say that at this time. I just finished this book called Unbroken. About an olympian runner, Louis Zamperini, stranded on a raft for 47 days, picked up by the Japanese and spent 4 years in pow camps. The story is really amazing, and this man's view of life (he is still alive at 96) is stunning. He was talking about his last days on the raft, when he knew he was dying the raft drifted into an area of the Pacific called the Dulldrums, a silent water with no waves or breeze. He talks about looking up at the sky and being filled with love of the creation around him. It left me with the feeling of appreciation of my current situation, as yucky as it is. Everyone should read this book.
The loudest truth I ever heard was the softest sound.

Good news, bad news, good news. Nothing is straightforward, is it Sarge?

Thinking I might not get a TV licence when I move. Unplugged aerial and seeing if I can detune my TV right now in preparation. I've been pretty much only watching DVDs and online stuff for months anyway.

Though we all should vent from time to time.

Life is...eh. Neither good nor bad. Which is neither good nor bad. I'm working 6 days a week and it's killing me, but at least I have work. My son starts kindergarten Wednesday. I'm not sure how I'll react. We'll see, I suppose.

Flipping through the magazine that comes with the Sunday paper over lunch, as I always do - quickly past the fashion & beauty, interviews with people I've never heard of, read the problem page (always do that), and finally flip through the telly pages where I see a picture of two mice (I think at the time) in dresses.

Apparently there is a TV programme about tiny animals which includes this week a woman who makes dresses and jewellery for rats

I'm....................speechless.

You'll probably cry. And you will survive. And you will pray for wisdom when your son comes home with stories about other families' messed-upness, and swell with pride when he brings home a great picture or writing attempt. Bring the camera!!

Today's advice for people with small bathrooms:-

Always put the lid of the toilet down before you take your false teeth out!

Oh no, Iolanthe! But...but...sorry, I can't help it:

One time, I was wearing my work ID clipped to my pants when I used the bathroom. The ID flipped off while I was flushing and flew into the toilet, and away it went. Try explaining *that* to Security.

Oh, don't mind me, laugh away. I'm quite used to being the cause of others' hilarity. Water off a duck's back.

So the valuation for my mortgage was scheduled for today. Yesterday, I had calls and emails saying that the vendor had requested to postpone the valuation until she finds out if she has her own mortgage offer. And today, I got messages saying the valuation has been rescheduled - for today.

I'm confused.
