How do you feel today? v. 3.0
Moderator: Orlion
My third day in Arizona. I just finished three days at the Grand Canyon. It is so spectacular. How do you find words for such creation? I will put some pics in the photography thread. I needed this time off so badly. I just drove through the desert and am in Page. Tomorrow we go to Antelope Canyon

Happy Lincolnshire Day everyone. 1 October is the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Rising of 1536 - a rising of Catholics against Henry VIII which caused him to call Lincolnshire "The most brute and beastly shire of the whole realm."
Enjoy, Lorin, and come back refreshed!

It's also Nigerian Independence Day!!!
My heart feels funny lately. It;s not tachycardia, I had that a few years ago and all I had to do was cut down on coffee and it went away. I don't know what this is. I just notice my heart pumping more lately. No history of heart problems in my family whatsoever, so maybe it's nothing. But I do plan to see a doctor this week.

Deer -- good idea.
lorin -- Glad you're taking a break and I'm also glad you got to the Grand Canyon.
We didn't make it to Antelope Canyon when I was in Arizona -- didn't even think to ask to go, more fool I. Yes, post pictures!
I checked out my frequent-flier miles after the European trip, and realized I had enough for a round trip to Alaska. So I went ahead and booked myself a flight for the end of May next year. Hopefully I'll be able to afford the rest of the trip by then...

My daughter's 1st birthday was yesterday. My wife had a ton of anxiety about it, though I never understood why. It went off without a hitch. I am now physically exhausted. And now it is Monday. :::sigh:::

Aww, happy b-day to little Sophia!
I agree with Iolanthe -- nothing sucks the energy out of a parent like a kid's birthday party.

I like that rule that says, have as many children at a kid's party as the number of years old they are. Works very well. More than that is just too stressful for the kid!! Of course our son's best baby buds were twins so we had 3 at his first couple birthday parties, but it was fine because they spent so much time together anyway so this was the same thing with cake.

We had 3 young guests at my son's 1st birthday party, my next door neighbour's 2 and my Goddaughter who is 4 months older than my son - and probably 10 adults.
I have pictures somewhere.

I used Deer's rule and it worked well for our kids. It's still exhausting, tho, to supervise a bunch of kids when you're not used to doing it.
I also learned that little kids don't eat much cake. Too many other stimuli. Three bites and they're distracted.

Depends if you have a professional cake maker in da house
I've always loved the kids' parties - no matter what age. It's definitely for the parents when they're young, but quickly becomes all about the kids. It's usually tiring, but we've found that the more effort we put into it, the more satisfying it is.
My daughter's 7th birthday was a disco party. We had a DJ and lots of other 6-7 year olds in the house. It was chaotic, but it only last a couple of hours, and the kids absolutely loved it. It's hard to beat the satisfaction of seeing your child having a ball!

I had an interesting day today. We arrived in Monument Valley on the Navaho reservation. Really spectacular. I know, I know, I keep saying that. We are staying in a place called the Goulding Lodge. We ended up here because everything everywhere was filled up. It is a lodge built by Harry Goulding in 1910. The lodge has a museum that supports the local Navaho schools. So I went in there. It was fascinating. Then, out of nowhere, I broke into tears. Out of the blue. It was so sad to see the devastation of these people. What a huge and intricate culture that we basically annihilated.
Putting aside my little weeping session, it is a great time. Tomorrow we are taking an 8 hour tour through Monument Valley, the Anasazi ruins, watching a rug weaving demo and on to Mystery Valley.
After that we go to Santa Fe for a week. I am hoping to see the balloon festival in Albuquerque.

talked to a maintenance boss i worked with on my last unit.
this year TDCJ shut down a unit about an hour from here,
the Central unit.
it was our distribution wharehouse for the region.
and now they are building a new distribution center
on the property of where my last unit is.
so a whole lot of jobs will be opening up next year.
and I aim to get one of them. if i can get the same
(or more!) money of course. I have worked as a
supervisor these past twelve years. and I've
worked in a food warehouse before.
other than money my only concern is that
it means giving up my rank.
i love being
a sergeant, but have to do what is best for
my family and my career.
