My Mom just moved and hasn't really got organized, and here comes this storm. I talked to her on the phone and asked about batteries for the torches, etc. Unfortunately she has no gas, only electric stove in the new place, but thankfully she has the money to go out and eat. In fact, she could go stay in a hotel with backup power if she needed to; but plenty of people don't have that option.
Hang in there, folks! for warmth!

Sandy is hitting Massachusetts pretty well. I would not want to be in New Jersey or Virginia, it looks as if they are getting slammed pretty hard. I imagine aliantha is in a bit of a tight spot right about now. I'm amazed we still have power at the moment. The news is 24x7 hurricane reporting, interspersed with the same 4 political ads playing over and over and over ...
aliantha wrote:We're battening down hatches here in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. I do kind of hope this thing turns into something, because otherwise the weather forecasters are gonna look pretty stupid. Pretty much the whole city is shut down tomorrow, including the federal government, the Metro system, and our office.
The thing I'm really worrying about it the drive to Toronto on Thursday. Hopefully the areas that get snow will be pretty much dug out by then...
Good luck Ali and anyone else who is in the path or in the reach of the hurricane. I'm complaining here because there's no wind to dry my washing, but I certainly don't want what you'll be getting.
Your wash wouldn't dry if you hung it outside here right now, anyhow.
Amazingly, I too still have power so far, tho the lights have flickered a couple of times. But they're now saying the worst period for DC will be overnight tonight.
Deer, I hope restaurants will be open for your mom to go out and eat. I went out this morning to get cat food (I should have picked up a bag over the weekend but forgot) and a lot of stores and restaurants were already closed. She may have to drive a distance from her immediate area to find working civilization. Fingers crossed for her. And for everybody affected by Sandy.

Good luck guys.

Ditto that. My son is in VA. I'm sure he'll be fine. I grew up on the East Coast and lived through plenty of hurricanes, blizzards, ice storms, even a freak tornado.

Attempting to research the candidates for next month's election for the newly-created role of police and crime commissioner, who will have full budgetary authority over the police forces in our area. Finding anything out is a bit of a pain, though.
- The independant candidate has no website, and his Twitter consists in its entirety of 3 retweets of news articles stating that he is running for the post. I'm in favour of keeping the big political parties out, but no idea if this guy is good for the part - all I can find is statements about being "zero tolerance on crime and criminals" and thinknig about what the common man wants.
- The Conservative has a website, but it only contains stock statements copy-pasted from the central website for the PCC elections. I'm not a fan of the Conservative Party in any case. The only statements about his approach to the role are all just about how young and local he is. His Twitter apparently saw very heavy use - right up until the end of the 2010 elections, when it went dead and hasn't been revived (although he still had the link put up on the PCC election site...).
- The Labour candidate is a little better - he's active on Twitter, and actually says something about his policy in his stock candidacy statement (that he's against privatisation). This may wind up being my de facto vote just because of the lack of information on the other parties and my natural dislike of Conservatives.
- The other option is UKIP. Moving on...
Can't wait for the next generation who actually grew up with social media to get involved in local politics. At least then we might have an idea who these people are.
(This is not to start any discussion of the politics, just to complain about the state of local politics here where no one seems to give enough of a damn to actually tell you what you're voting for. Hence posting here and not the Tank.)
I pay attention to neither - nor do the majority of the public, these days, I would think.
It's just inexcusable these days for a public figure like a politician to not maintain an online presence, particularly when campaigning for an election.
Well, there we are. I think we oldies have the best of both worlds. We are up to date in the technology stakes, and know how to read papers and listen to radio.
I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

Hi guys. DC seems to have survived Frankenstorm relatively unscathed -- unlike New York, where a chunk of the city appears to be underwater. (lorin, are you out there?) I've gotten two days off from work because of the storm. And I'm wondering about the condition of our NY office -- we had just recently moved into the financial district, where a lot of the worst flooding occurred.

... we've emerged form Hurricane Sandy unscathed and with power. We seem to be on an island of power in a sea of energylessness. I attribute our good fortune to my buying a portable electrical generator a month ago - a sure fire guarantee that we'll never lose power again.
Sorry to throw a pity party, but I feel like crud. I woke up at midnight choking and couldn't breathe properly for at least an hour. Wheezing, coughing, my heart pounding. This is not me, I am always the healthy one!! Feel overwhelmed at work and I just want to go home and sleep and it ain't happening. Bleh.

We're hitting the road tomorrow for Toronto and World Fantasy Convention. I'll tell Romeo y'all said hi. I don't think SRD is going this year. I assume he'll go next year when TLD is released -- and of course, I'm going to skip that one because it's in England.

Looks like my Dad weathered the storm ok too. He didn't even lose power at all, no driveway flooding and while he's still not sure if he lost a bunch of trees on his 59 acre spread, none of them were around the house or in the driveway so all his precautions came to naught. Glad to hear everyone else is doing ok.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....
Damn. It's the middle of the night, and I just spent 2 hours trying to convince windows to let me have my internet connection back so I could submit my Inferno turn.
Stupid windows. Just cut off my connection to the other machine (which has the internet connection) suddenly. One day it was working, the next it wasn't.
Well screw it. I resorted to a 3rd party virtual proxy prog and bypassed windows entirely.
As I sit here, Win7 is telling me I don't have internet access.
In Toronto for WFC. It rained off and on all day during our drive up here -- the drive that was supposed to take 9+ hours ended up taking 12. Ugh. But it's been fun since then. The girls and I had dinner with Romeo and his new wife (and a bunch of other folks) last night. They're adorable together. I did a reading, signed some programs and sold two books. Heading home tomorrow.
