World Fantasy Convention? Not 'til November, and it's in Brighton, near the sea. </one track mind> ;)

Just participated in my first Google+ hangout. I didn't realize it was going to be a video chat. 8O

I can vouch for the cathedral. But a day is probably too short.
...places like Hampton Court...
If you do this one, do not go by boat. It was the most boring 4 hours of my life.

The actual palace and the maze etc are great...but the four hour boat ride really killed.

Haha. The London Worldcon is in August 2014, so not quite overlapping. ;)

I will be in London for the first weekend in May, for a WoW guild meetup plus some sightseeing.

I'll arrive in London mid-day on April 25 and return on May 2. So I'll miss you by a week, Murrin.

Thank you for the kind offer, Iolanthe, I will take a look at Lincoln, though I don't think I could impose on your hospitality like that. :) I did not know there was going to be a Richard III museum in Leicester. I did take a look at the cathedral and thought it probably by itself wasn't enough to make the trip. With the museum…

Canterbury could be combined with Dover, I think, though if I got into that Hobgoblin ale, it sounds like I might wind up in Paris!

I did book my first event for the trip. I'm going to a classical music concert at St. Martin in the Fields church. At some point, I will to go to the Royal Observatory, though Greenwich looks to be pretty close to the center of things. While looking that up I also learned that the Cutty Sark still existed. I had no idea. I think I would like to check that out at the same time.

Damelon, I wouldn't have offered if I thought you would be an imposition :D but Lincoln is a long way, and as Av says, perhaps you need more than a day and an evening. If you are thinking of Leicester, and wouldn't mind a companion or two, I'd love to see the museum and cathedral too.

St Martins in the Fields, good choice. Right on Trafalgar Square, and not far from Buck House.

Well, crap. Now *I* want to go. :(

We missed the Royal Observatory when I took the girls. I totally wanted to straddle the official line.

My favorite thing in London, bar none, was an exhibit of original documents at the British Library. Beatles lyrics scrawled on the back of an envelope, the original manuscript for Jane Eyre, illuminated manuscripts, that sort of thing. I could've spent hours there.

Oh yeah, so, my day. I nearly had a meltdown and actually had to leave my desk for a few minutes and hide in the bathroom.... All week, I've been getting handed these crap projects by my attorneys -- they forward me an e-mail and ask me to print the gajillion attachments. Traveling Guy sent me one late Tuesday afternoon, which I promptly sent to our services department to print overnight. When we looked at the result yesterday morning, we realized Services had screwed up the project in multiple ways. So I ended up printing it myself, after all, yesterday morning. It was about 30 documents in all -- mostly pdfs, some Word docs (several of them set for A4 paper, which I had to resize to 8.5x11"), a couple of PowerPoint presentations -- and he needed four copies of each. The whole thing took me over an hour, in between answering the phone, etc.

Today, it was my other partner's turn. She sent me, in succession, three e-mails with attachments to print. The third one was the one that nearly sent me off the cliff; the attachment was a zip file containing six or eight folders, and each of the folders held multiple documents. The very first doc in the very first folder was a TIFF that wouldn't print. Many of the remaining files had loooong spreadsheets attached, and weren't necessarily optimized for printing. Anyway, when I got back to my desk, I told her about the problems -- and *then* she tells me that she only really needs the letters and not to worry about printing the spreadsheets. :x

Keep in mind that all these printing projects involve nothing but opening a file, maybe doing a little fancy footwork, hitting "print", closing the file, and moving on to the next file. It requires some concentration but it's tedious as all hell. I know I should be grateful that I have a job, yada yada, but I just don't know how I'm gonna do seven more years of this.

Okay, rant over. Thanks for letting me complain.

I've been on it. If you're there, the Royal Maritime Museum is also worth a visit.

You can also see, (but not board IIRC) the HMS Victory, now the oldest commissioned naval ship. Apparently it's in Portsmouth...I saw it as a child, but don't think it was there at the time. Could be mistaken though.

I stopped drinking alchol years ago. I do miss the old-fashion pubs and the quirky Firkin & _. Very relaxing places to spent and hour or so.

You'll know London better than me and I've never been to Oxford Town.
I lived in Cambridge for a while. Not a lot to see except the college architecture and maybe the Eagle pub ( ) - where the WWII Air Force Servicemen scrolled their names on the ceiling.

Ely cathedral is awesome.

You would think it is friggin' Armageddon around here the way people are acting. Predicting 2 feet of snow on Long Island. Jeeze, it's just snow. But people are hoarding water, food, salt yada yada yada. There is no gas for the cars. Its just plain silly. I think it is some sort of Sandy ptsd. I think people are just skittish from the hurricane 3 months ago.

SoulBiter wrote:Thank you for all your kind thoughts and prayers. All of them have been much appreciated!

My wife and I had this read for us at the memorial service:
We can’t find a way to speak of August without speaking of his parents Ashley and Chris. As we look over the past nine months, we can only say that is was a journey of growth. Ashley and Chris matured and grew in responsibility during this time, exceeding our expectations. When they first came to us with their news, they were fearful of what our reaction would be, however they had already developed a plan for themselves and the new life they were bringing into this world.

At six months into the pregnancy, we got the call from Ashley and Chris that she had gone to her regular doctor’s appointment and they were sending her to Savannah to the hospital. We rushed down to be with them not knowing what to expect, but certainly not expecting that they would deliver little August 3 months early at 1 pound 5 ounces. We weren’t given a lot of hope at that time. 1lb 5oz is so small and so very early. But she had this baby and he was beautiful! They named him August Orion Stewart. Two proud parents with the help of the doctors and nurses had brought this tiny life into the world and his light burned so very brightly!
Over the next few months, both Ashley and Chris took every opportunity to be at the hospital and be with August, despite the physical distance from their home and both still continuing their college education. Both Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled around and they both said,” If August isn’t coming home then we aren’t either”.

The last week was a blur of surreal activity. A call and a rush to the hospital. Sitting with August, Ashley and Chris. Praying and sending prayer requests. With the doctor’s report we knew we needed a flat out miracle. Chris and Ashley were faced with a decision that no parent should ever have to make, and it was heart wrenching for us to watch them go through it and not be able to make it better. Even with all this tragedy, even being faced with knowing that August’s life might be measured in minutes, Ashley wanted to be sure that his life was consecrated to God and asked to have him Baptized. The Chaplain, the nurses and the doctors all gathered around August’s bed for the service. The Bible verse that was read was from Matthew. “Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

Multiple episodes of desperate attempts to revive this sweet life, the decision was made by these courageous and loving young parents. August had all the hoses and monitors taken off, and was swaddled and put in the arms of his parents to say goodbye. They held him, and loved him as he passed into the arms of Jesus, where he truly became perfect.

After that we all sit and wonder. We prayed for a miracle. We prayed that God would step into this moment and heal all that was going on with him. We trusted, we prayed and we all waited. And then we were left wondering. Where was God in all this? Where was the Miracle that we prayed for? We see now that the Miracle happened. It just wasn’t what we had thought that it should be. The Miracle is August Orion Stewart. A boy born at 1 lb 5 oz , who touched us all over the last 3 and a half months, who grew to 5 lbs 7 ozs. That was the true gift from God. That was the miracle.
That was deeply moving and amazing. Thank you for sharing this beautiful little soul with us.

SB, so sorry for your loss but glad that you already see the blessings he gave to you and your family. He's a tiny cherub and most beautiful. He has blessed me as well since hearing your story and seeing his picture made me call my sister and talk to my nieces today. I'm sure he's inspired other watchers to appreciate their loved ones with deeper feeling as well. Hugs to you and yours.

Hello all,

I haven't been on here for ages. Several reasons, been trying to cut down on my online time in general and also my computer has been playing up again lately.

Some updates! Couple of weeks ago, on the morning of the 1st, I was admitted to hospital with some nasty stomach pain and vomiting. They thought it was my appendix, so they took it out. Turns out it wasn't the appendix. So the past week or so I've been recovering from the operation, lying about lots and taking lots of antibiotics and painkillers.

Sad thing was I was supposed to be doing my first 10min headlining comedy spot on that Wednesday, which I obviously had to cancel. It's cool, though, the guy who runs the room was very nice and squeezed me in a six minute slot this Wednesday, and he promised I could do ten next time 8) .

Apart from those dramatics no major news here. Hope you all are well.

(Edited to add: SoulBiter, my condolences for something I can't imagine. Sarge, well wishes to your wife!)

A Cambo sighting! Sorry to hear you've been sick. I hope they figure out what you've actually got... :(

And Sarge, my best get-well wishes to Julie's mom. :)

I'm doing better this week than I was last week. I've pretty much decided that it's time to move on from my current job. Now to brush up the resume and start looking for something else. Sigh.

I had an irritating day. I'll blog about it for those inquiring minds who want to know. Suffice it to say that I give everyone here a big fat snuggly wuggly hug because a hug goes both ways and is the most beneficial human gesture when it comes at the right moment.
