Also it could be just to keep Theon in the story. Since he isn't in ASOS which is being divided into 2 seasons, he wouldn't be back until season 5.

Well, the events happened during the timeline of ASOS, they just weren't shown until flashbacks in ADWD, so it makes sense to show it now.

Plus, it keeps Alfie Allen on the payroll :)

I know why the show is doing it. What I'm unsure of is what exactly they're showing.
Spoiler
The books involved Theon being slowly and painfully tortured in a dungeon, then being forced to participate in torture. They may have released him just to capture him again like in the show - we know Ramsey enjoys that, and Theon was made to join in. What he didn't do was release Theon and ride around the countryside with him for a book just to draw out the "surprise! I'm the bad guy!" moment.

I'm not saying what they're doing with it is bad. I'm saying I don't know where they're going with it yet.

You don't think he's gotten enough just desserts already?

Watched the new episode. One of the best moments in the books, and they did it justice.

I suppose they could have used
Spoiler
All three dragons, as in the book. But maybe that was beyond their CGI budget?

Well, I'm pissed. I'm tired of getting involved in these characters and story arcs only to watch them get killed off and replaced with flatter characters and less compelling story arcs. I've only read the first 2 books, and I don't think I want to read books 3-4 now.

If GRRM kills off Tyrion or Dany, tell me by PM so I won't waste any more of my time.

Book 3 is an amazing piece of fantasy literature. Easily one of the best books I've ever read by any author. If you liked Book 1 and 2 at all, you owe it to yourself to at least read Book 3.

Book 4 is... well, it's the book right after Book 3, that's about the best thing I can say about it :)

Good grief, if you have any presence on the Internet at all, you'll be spoiled on this episode. My wife hasn't read the books, and merely did some harmless surfing (non-GoT related) and was spoiled on the Red Wedding. Even George Takei's twitter feed has the spoiler (yes, she follows him ... he's quite a character, apparently).

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Can people overreact just a bit more. Wow, characters that don't have "Charactershields[sup]TM[/sup]. What a radical concept.

I completely agree, and this is why I stopped reading. Who do you root for? Who do you care about?

This is the one major lowpoint of the series. There are other dark parts, but nothing compares to this.

From what I understand, that is the case. I also think it is interesting because
Spoiler
there are plenty of POV characters to root for... in fact, the RW does not seem to dispose of any main POV. Now you might say, but what about...? To which I would reply, why do you think I spoilered this block of text?

So I finally watched this, and I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised. They stuck a lot closer to the story than I expected, and doing 1 book per season has let them keep a lot of the important stuff in. Casting was generally pretty good too.
