Since I couldn't post this in the 'Tank...
New Zealand today became the 13th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.
After a campaign (for want of a better word) that was marked by remarkably respectful debate, Parliament passed the legislation in a conscience vote (where MPs don't have to vote along party lines), with 77 votes for and 44 against.
One thing that has surprised me is the way that this particular debate seems to have generated a huge interest, particularly amongst younger people, in the political process. People have talked about it at work, chatted about it on Facebook, and even watched the live debates on Parliament TV (the channel where entertainment usually goes to die).
It also appears that the number of same-sex couples likely to take advantage of the law change will dramatically outstrip the number who elected to have a Civil Union ceremony after that law was passed around six years ago. Perhaps people were holding out for the real thing.
Mods, feel free to move this to the 'Tank.

You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.
In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.
He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.

vs, that's great news and would be a perfect fit for the Same-Sex Marriage thread in the 'Tank.
There was a change to the 'Tank a few months back (after some fairly intense argy-bargy) and now it is an open group. This gives [Syl] the power to ban people from the 'Tank (but not the rest of KW) if they are deemed to have seriously and persistently infringed the rules.
A long-time member like yourself knows the score in the 'Tank, so you can probably skip to the end of this post (by [Syl]) to the link that lets you join the open group.

Or we could keep the Tank as a closed group and let the disease spread to other parts of the Watch.

the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.
